The X-men have been going into outer space for almost as long as there have been X-men. The far reaches…

This issue avoided any of the clangingly jarring mis-character moments that I have come to associated with the Fraction run….

June 27, 2012 5:02 pm You hit upon one of the great flaws in bad science fiction writing. It is not having things that occur that violate the laws of physics as we know it. It is a failure to set up the rules for your universe and then worse failing to obey the rules that have been set up. Some of the most fun in comics/science fiction are clever solutions to the agreed upon rules, whatever they are. Some of the least fun is feeling like the writers just wave their magic get of trouble pseudo-science wand to fix all problems. So as a scientist and a comic book reader, I am not bothered by outlandish, crazy stuff. Either it is pure fantasy and I concentrate instead on the character work or art or themes, whatever, OR I accept the crazy new rules of physics or magic or politics and enjoy the sci-fi puzzle/story (in addition to the all the character/art/thematic stuff that needs to be there). I only get annoyed when, for instance in AvX Vs. #1, the writer goes out of there way to establish how they are using our established laws of physics and understanding of the solar system, only to blow something so basic as light travel time.
June 27, 2012 3:12 pm Maybe I am reading the vibe wrong, but I think most people are just upset with a corporation tampering with a piece of art not for the sake of more art, but just to squeeze more money out of it. And more personally, readers are concerned that they are going to buy these issues hoping for a portion of that original magic, but get something bland instead that leaves a taste in their mouth that might even effect their enjoyment of the original or at the very least dilute the brand. I am sure a subset does care about creator's rights, but I don't think Moore's Watchmen are really the place to plant that flag. Moore has been very well compensated for work that he did For Hire. As opposed to cases of poor Kirby, Siegel, Shuster, Ditko, & folk, the ownership rules were very well laid out by the mid-80s as were many revenue sharing schemes. And of course the Watchmen are so based on the Charlton characters that if Moore had done this independent of DC, DC probably could have sued him. I have sympathy for the notion of not messing with perfection, but am not naive enough to think any corporation would abide by that. I am honestly surprised DC took this long to cash in on more Watchmen. And yes, I am buying them, but because I like the creators. These are stories inspired by Watchmen, not an extension of Moore's story.
June 27, 2012 2:54 pm The initial 7 issue run was a disaster. I think that is a documented fact, with Silvestri having health problems almost right away throwing the art into a mad death spiral. I think (hope) this effected the writing as well, as it was well below most Aaron I have read. This new take of reverse anger has been intriguing, but as much as I love Steve Dillon (and I do love his stuff) that was another art trainwreck last issue. Guess the Hulk is just not his bag, baby. I am cautiously optimistic that Tom Raney can at least right the art ship and give Aaron's story a chance. I don't mind bald Hulk as a concept, just the execution so far.
June 27, 2012 2:32 pm It can if the shooter is braced and the shootee is not, but your point is basically valid.
June 27, 2012 2:31 pm The Marvel writers have been making that controlling the iron in the blood leap of scientific logic since at least 1973, when Magneto starting controlling minds in Avengers #110-111 be controlling the blood flow inside them. The whole Magneto has power over Magnetism has always grated against real science considering that magnetism is just the flip side of electric forces. You can't have one without the other. And once you start being able to manipulate electrons you can pretty much control everything: be it ferromagnetic, paramagnetic, conducting, insulated, or chocolate pudding. Definitely a case where we need to just accept that comic physics are not the same as ours. But yeah, the glossing over of the over 1 hour round trip to Jupiter was mighty annoying. AvX followed that up with polar bears in the Antarctic, so you can throw basic zoology out as well.
June 22, 2012 8:31 pm Would have worked if it had been acknowledged. Like, if Hope had said, "Where in the hell did you find a Polar Bear in Antarxtica? Their natural habitat is over 10,000 miles away!" Then it would have been genius.
June 22, 2012 8:20 pm That drove me up the freaking wall. It would be weirder to find them there than on that LOST island.
June 11, 2012 5:56 pm I really like the concept of Banner sabotaging Hulk every time he drifts off to sleep. I think Peter David did the reverse of this story years ago with Grey Hulk, but psychotic banner doing it to the Hulk is really cool. I really like Steve Dillon, but I am not sure if the Hulk is the place for him... But let's face it, anything is better than what happened to the art in that first arc. Holy crud, that art fell apart so spectacularly it nuked the story to smithereens. I'll take weird Dillon over rushed Portacio every day of the week.
June 11, 2012 5:52 pm I really like Nic Klein and that first issue was fairly gripping. Then the spy thriller took what I appears to be a sci-fi turn. I haven't decided if I love or hate that, yet. We'll see...
May 8, 2012 4:15 pm The movie is going to make 2 billion dollars and is based on an open-ended concept. There will be an Avengers 2 and they will make it as fast as they can considering what they have already committed to. So whether you want it or not, it is coming. The bigger question is whether they will try to continue this back and forth dynamic between the solo and group films or try to bunch up more Avengers films faster. That would be a mistake, but who would be really surprised to see Hollywood strangle their golden goose for as much money right now as they can get? As to whether I want one? If it is these actors and Whedon, hell yes. Most of these actors and Whedon, mostly hell yes. Some of these actors and another director, yes but with trepidation. A lot of comic book sequels have been damn good, Iron Man II being a serious fly in the ointment. It is the third film that tends to suck...
