This recent story arc on Mighty Avengers has been real hit and miss for me. I find the Unspoken of the Inhumans to be a really fascinating, almost mythic figure. I love finding out about the Royal family pre-Blackbolt. And the Slave Engine ends up delivering. It is not something you want him to turn on. The only downside is that three issues in and there are still no Avengers involved, just Chinese superheroes (which are awesome), Quicksilver (he almost counts), and USAgent.
Meanwhile the other half of the story line is Stature discovering that the Scarlet Witch is not all she appears to be. Loki puts a spell on her so she can't say anything, which has the effect of making an already irritating character twice as annoying. So she calls in the Young Avengers, Ronin shows up, and the whole story turns into a complete mess. It is just a general brawl, with no interesting interactions or tactics (unless you count a kiss a tactic). And worst of all, at the end it is still not revealed that Loki is pretending to be the Scarlet Witch. He teleports away just in time. I suppose at least Ronin is a real Avenger, but it is not clear what he is doing wandering outside the New Avengers book.
I am hopeful next issue is all Unspoken Battle Royale with Avengers, while Loki is either revealed or is just not mentioned. Or maybe Stature is crushed by a pillar. Basically Mighty Avengers appears to be an inconsistent offering under Slott and Gage, alternatively great and deadly dull, often in the same issue. This could possibly be a result of the split writing duties, I am not sure. I found the art by Pham to be similarly up and down, but on the whole I liked it.
