I am not sure if Nicola Scott is going to return to this title or not. DC may finally have realized what they go there. Peter Nguyen does a solid job in this one shot. None of his panels really wowed me, but the story flowed easily, the characters were easily recognizable, and he drew a lot of strippers. I can not complain. I can feel slightly dirty, but no complaining.
The story is a one and done, but it introduces the newest member of the team: Black Alice. Apparently she can borrow the powers of any magic user or magical creature, transform herself and wreak havoc. It does not appear the mage has to be nearby (maybe when she first steals power proximity is required, I don't know) so she is a real potential armory of arcane might. What makes her interesting as a character is that she is only 16; a teenager who has already fallen down into some of the darker pits of magic. The team is hesitant about bringing her on board, because as Bane says (and now I love Bane...wtf Simone!), she might still be saved. The Six are all tainted beyond repair and don't want to bring a child into their world. She feels as if she is already lost and this is the first place where she might belong.
I think the introduction of Black Alice provides an avenue to explore the loss of innocence and what it means to cross that line into villainy, or at least extreme amorality. The first half of this issue is a very nice demonstration of the dark place the Six are at. An act of heroism for them is kidnapping a convicted child rapist/killer so he can be handed over to the bereaved father for a fate worse than death. While not evil exactly, it is far from good. These are badly broken people trying to find a way as best they can. If you like your heroes dark and your humor twisted, Secret Six is it.
