I was reading Brightest Day the other night, enjoying the art but lamenting that most of stories were not really grabbing me. Of all the resurrected people that came back at the end of Blackest Night, I thought Maxwell Lord was really the most interesting and he is not in Brightest Day at all, but over in Justice League Generation Lost. Oh well, I thought, nothing I can do about that...
Long pause. Palm slaps forehead.
So I ran out this week and, throwing caution to the wind, bought all four of the JLGL issues put out so far. And I was not at all disappointed. Maxwell Lord is a great villain and the idea that he made everyone else forget him sets up a "great heroes on the run and against the world" scenario. After a slightly down issue 3 (too much confusing OMAC/Blue Beetle silliness for my taste), issue 4 really delivered. Not only do we get back to what Max is up to -- and the odd, Blackest Night problems he has developed -- but we get a real insight that there is more going on here than just a megalomaniac's revenge. Max has a plan that requires the help of the people who hate him the most. Good stuff.
I don't know these characters at all, really, so I can't say how out of character they might be acting, but generally they are working well together except for Ice. She is a bit petulant and annoying. The art is ok. It is telling the story, but not blowing me away. If only they had one of Brightest Day artists (who are all phenomenal) working on the other biweekly, which is surprisingly the better story (for now, anyway).
