Before picking up Captain America #600, the last issue of Cap I bought was in the 80s and had Steve Rogers battling a Serpent Society and a murderous Scourge, so I represent those that have missed out on the vast majority of Brubaker's acclaimed run and are arriving late the party. With the Marvel buzz machine in full force, it seemed like Reborn might be a perfect time to check out what all the Cap Love was all about. I kinda liked #600, but was understandably lost as it was mainly a filler/connection piece to Reborn. Loved #601 (I ended up with both color and B&W versions), but of course that was its own animal. So, I was jazzed for the Reborn event.
Now on issue 3 and got to say I am disappointed. It is not bad by any means. Brubaker is delivering a solid story with Cap lost in time and Bucky and Co. working to try and find him and bring him home, while a fairly serious set of rogues (Red Skull, Osborn) stand in their way. But the pacing feels very slow to me. Here we are 3 issues in and we are still spending a lot of time wandering around Steve's past. And it is not new stories of his past, but the same stories everyone who has every read a cap story is familiar with (again with the iceberg...).
The other major piece, Bucky's story, just isn't quite clicking for me -- first they plot a really stupid break-in that could not possibly succeed and now in this issue he escapes with ridiculous ease. The body and soul of Captain America are a stake here, so you would think both sides would try and step up their game a little. The only thing that is really interesting me is the Red Skull. A part of me really wants to see him get Rogers' body, as that would really be an unexpected outcome. As it is, with the media hoopla surrounding all of this, it feels like the ending (Steve's return) is a fore-drawn conclusion, eliminating a lot of the tension. Maybe Brubaker can find a surprising angle. I hope so.
The art by Bryan Hitch is generally good. I liked Namor tossing the Steveberg and the new Red Skull head at the end. Other spots (Cap two page spread leaping around the Kree/Skrull War) didn't look so great to me. It lacks a bit for consistency to my eye and I often found myself wishing for a few more panels here and there rather than large, uninteresting spreads and half pages. Overall, I think both artist and writer are stretching so hard to make this big and important that I think some storytelling is falling through the cracks. Again, don't get me wrong. I like it. But considering this is the culmination of 50 issues of what has been described as a brilliant run and that Marvel has every reason in the world to throw every resource their way, I have just been a bit underwhelmed.

Jeesh, this is the FIRST review of this issue? I had forgotten all about it. I dropped Cap a few months ago, but keep up with what’s happenin’. I know the Brubaker-worshippers are still out there–and this isn’t to slight them, cuz I’ll probably read Cap Reborn when it’s traded–but it’s interesting to me that they’re so quiet once the book they swore by is obviously less-than-fantastic now. C’mon, say somethin’! I could always admit when an issue of Whedon’s Astonishing X-Men or Morrison’s Batman was clearly not a 5/5…
@flapjaxx I really liked this book, I just don’t have a lot to say about it. Generalizing about other posters’ motives is annoying.
Yeah, I think this was the best issue yet.
@flapjaxx It is only two days from the release. I guess akamuu skipped reviewing this one, which knocks out something like 50% of your reviewer base right there.
@JimBilly4: hahaha. I had a couple of shows this week, and still haven’t finished reading my stack.
@akamuu Heh, don’t get me wrong. I think your reviews are solid and a valuable service to the site. And they tend to be short and to the point unlike myself, who likes to ramble on. Please continue to use your position of power in the comic book shop for good and not evil.
