I was just listening to the podcast with Chris Neseman who was talking about how he liked this comic as something he would give a 7-year old neice, if only the pug would curse less.

Yeah. If Chris has read this one I assume he has completely dismissed that notion. These pooches debuted in the Dark Horse horror anthologies. Yes, they are cute. Yes, the art is beautiful. But the reason the pug swears is because these are adult stories with very dark, adult themes. What Evan and Jill are doing is really pretty cool. The water color, charming art style with adorable dogs and cats as characters sets a time and place that the reader will immediately identify with childhood and children’s books. When Dworkin introduces the horror elements they are all the more shocking, like a child’s fairy tale gone wrong. It reminds me of the style of horror Stephen King used in “IT”, only instead of kids meeting what goes bump in the night, it is their pets. The dark, hidden places of the world were all much more terrifying when we were young and this series takes us back there in a way that seems really fresh and original.

Combined with Evan’s wit, these make for very entertaining horror stories for adults. The first issue is a nice re-introduction to the characters and definitely has some of the funny, but it was only a so-so story. This one will will make you gasp, cringe, and cry.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 5 - Excellent
