After a truly engrossing opening issue, this second issue of the arc didn't quit administer the same punch, acting more as connective tissue to the larger story. It explains to us who Molecule Man is, why he is there, why people are disappearing, and just how awesome his powers are. To emphasize that Molecule Man is really one of the heavy hitters Bendis has him essentially killing every member of the Avengers team, including a fantastic tearing apart of the Sentry. Of course the Avengers won't stay dead and/or incapacitated. The Sentry already dies every issue and we know that Molecule Man's mastery over reality means he can snap his fingers and restore everyone with a single thought. So there is not a lot of tension there. Bendis does all the Avengers wacking so that so we get it. Molecule Man is an omnipotent enemy, setting up the question: How do you defeat someone with infinite power?
Well the obvious answer is Secret Wars II. You create a crossover so awful the character is banished from multiverse. But barring that, we will have to await until next issue to see what Osborn and Ms. Hand come up with.
In addition to being a middle issue of a longer story, this issue lacks most of the great Bendis dialogue and banter. There is some back and forth with the "voices" in Molecule Man's head, but as they are all aspects of the same person it isn't quite the same as Daken, Bullseye, Ares, and Moonstone having it out. So I think that is another reason it was just so-so. I also am not a huge fan of dreamscapes, illusion worlds, and the like, which tend to make the world I am reading so unreal that it pulls me out of the story.
Let me say that Deodato is really doing some beautiful work on this series. I am not totally in love with the colorist (Beredo) who made the opening scenes just much too blue and then later helicarrier scenes much too red. Subdued, moody coloring is all right (this is the Dark Avengers after all), but Beredo was approaching monochromatic at tmes which I didn't feel served the art all that well. Well, at least it wasn't brown. This issue also features some really beautiful painted art by Greg Horn that take up about a third of the issue. While a bit static, they panels are really beautiful and as they take place in "Molecular Reality" the transition in art makes sense. Anything to give Deodato enough time to draw every book, I say.
