If this was the only good comic to come out of the relaunch it was worth. Morrison has taken Superman back to his ’30s Socialist roots, sticking up for the little guy and leveling the playing against evil, cheap-labor-using corporatists. Not only does this make for a new and revived Superman but it will create an interesting dynamic between Supes and Morrison’s Batman, who has become the ultimate capitalist, incorporating the Batman persona and franchising it across the globe. I can only hope Johns takes advantage of this in Justice League.

Morales’ art in this issue is some of the best he’s done. It’s kinetic and it channels Will Eisner in all the right ways to bring home Morrison’s new vision of Superman and Metropolis. The people and the city look alternatively modern yet still retain a “Contract With God” downtroddeness to them.

All in all, great stuff. I may think socialism is merely feudalism in new clothes but it makes perfect sense for a strong man who knows what’s best for everyone else to champion such an ideal. I can’t wait to see where it goes from here.
