This is a fantastic return to Superman’s humble beginnings as champion of the oppressed and not the past decade or so’s big blue boy scout. Morrison re-visits all of Siegel and Shuster’s old plots (from unrepentant business men to abusive husbands)in a few pages while creating an intelligent, brave but not pompous Superman unlike more recent interpretations have had him as. Morales turns in ever so slightly muddled pages, but still delivers a fantastic Eisner like Metropolis and expressive characters. People who have desired a return to Superman’s roots like me have finally been rewarded with a fantastic opening chapter to what looks to be a modernization of Superman’s first year.
