Getting used to change is not my strong suit, so it’s kind of wonder why I enjoy Grant Morrison so much. In particular, his transformative-mind-fuck treatments of well established icons like Batman, Superman, and Doom Patrol. After finally reading Morrison’s All-Star Superman this year, my expectations for Action Comics #1 were considerably higher than any of the other books in my “New 52” stack this week. Well after finishing the first issue, I can confidently say that it was not my favorite book in the stack. Superman is wearing jeans, he’s cocky, I don’t know where the hell we are in the timeline or if this is even part of an existing one, and there wasn’t much character development if it isn’t part of a timeline. But hell, who am I to complain? It was just the first issue, I still enjoyed the book, and I understand that Morrison is far better known for his expansive story arcs than one-shots. His books are best taken in like a David Lynch film; don’t ask questions–just take the damned ride.

  1. Seems to me that taking the damned ride with Morrison is what made “Final Crisis” such a load of old cobblers. I don’t really see why I should spend my money on something that doesn’t make sense. You’d have thought that DC would realise how much is riding on this book and brought the readers along with them. But from what you say, I gather not. Bad plan, DC.

    • I would agree with Roger – it has to eventually make sense. Batshit crazy is fun for a while, but it has to coalesce into something sensible or else what’s the point? What’s the meaning? Life may be a journey and not just a destination, but this is sequential fiction – it has to get somewhere, or else the reader is unsatisfied. You can’t just “jump the shark” and be whacky all the time.
