Swamp Thing by Scott Snyder and Yannick Paquette!
What an awesome combination of character and creative team!
This was one of the New 52 books I was most eager to read, but by the end of this issue I was left feeling that I wanted more, and not necessarily in a good way. Don’t get me wrong, I thought this book was pretty good, and I would expect no less from this writer and artist, as well as from a character whose classic Alan Moore incarnation was absolutely seminal to me in my formative years of comic fandom, but I can’t help feeling that the shorter page count in a lot of the DC books is hurting the stories, especially in these new #1 issues where you would expect as much bang for your buck as you could possibly get. In my review of Animal Man, which I also enjoyed, I suggested that it might be a book where the quality can only be truly judged once we’re a few issues in. I think this theory might also be applied to Swamp Thing. Heck, our favourite muck encrusted mockery of a man doesn’t even show up til right at the very end! I’m definitely sticking with this one for the long haul, and can’t wait to see Francesco Francavilla’s interpretation of Swampy a little further down the line. This first issue, however, was good enough without really bowling me over as I had expected it might.
