Oh.
My.
Gosh.
I knew this was going to be an awesome book from the first time I flipped through it (if not before), but I just wasn’t prepared for how awesome it would actually be!
That I would love Scott Snyder’s writing was pretty much a given. I’ve read everything he’s done since the first issue of American Vampire and he never, ever disappoints. I loved his run on Detective so much that I just wanted to see him on a Batman book every month for the rest of his life. And I was so glad, after reading this, that he nailed the character of Bruce Wayne and his relationship with Gotham City so perfectly and effortlessly, setting the scene for an epic Batman saga.
The aspect of the book I wasn’t sure whether I would like, however, was the art by Greg Capullo. Let me just say again:
OH.
MY.
GOSH!
Not being a fan of Spawn, this was my first exposure to Capullo’s work. And he totally blew me away-even more so than Jock on Detective. This is the best Batman I’ve read in years, and certainly the best looking-I would pick this guy even over Frank Quitely, and that’s no mean feat. The way Capullo draws Bruce in costume- I want action figures of that, I want statues of that, I want t-shirts of that! Just…WOW! I also loved all the little grace-notes he added like the question mark shaved into the Riddler’s hair, the bat symbol on the sole of Bruce’s boot- perfection!
I will probably read this issue three or four times, then again before reading #2, then again when the inevitable (it is inevitable, right?) hardcover collection comes out, then maybe a few more times if (please, God!) they release an absolute edition, just to soak up every drop of comic book goodness.
THIS is how you do a #1 issue!
OH.
MY.
GOSH….

This is an issue I will probably
