I only have Stormwatch to read from my stack this week. And my pick of the week was between this and Action. As someone who loved the original Animal Man run (even have a AM sketch by the first artist) I really thought that this was a good follow up to the classic book. It sets up the new series nicely, and there’s that family that made Animal Man such a unique character. This first issue really didn’t miss a beat from the old series, or those mini’s he had been in recently. And to be honest when this title was announced I was a little more than surprised, and thrilled. After all Animal Man isn’t what you would call a huge seller, but he does have a following.

It was solid, the only thing I have to down grade it on is the art. The way pages were laid out bugged me, its as if that was the reason the artist avoided using backgrounds. Plus there were anatomy issues, proportion issues and consistency problems. I understand that this was the look they were going for, but maybe this guy is better suited for covers. And that new costume is really bad. Like something out a 50’s sci fi movie, as if this is what spacemen wear. It’s looks a little like he took Adam Strange’s costume and had it done in blue, with white boots. It’s odd, there even reference his classic look with the goggles in this issue as what he wears. Well, at least Jim Lee didn’t armor him all up.

So the art down grades it for me.
