I have very little experience with Animal Man, having only read 52, which I absolutely loved. I know of the Grant Morrison work, I have just never read it. Well, if sort of story is what you’re looking for, it ain’t here. This was very, very Vertigoesque in tone. The dream sequence rather reminded me of Sam Keith style weirdness to tell the truth. Jeff Lemire has some serious range in his writing abilities.

I have read plenty of raving about Travel Foreman’s art, but I must say, it’s just not doing the trick for me. It’s jarringly sparse, but that may be by design, because this is by all means a darker, or even horror themed book. I just can’t help but think that final page turn may have had even more impact with a different artist. It was damn sure creepy, at any rate.

I will by all means be picking up issue #2, and I am looking forward to seeing where this title goes. This was good, by all means, but I can’t help but long for 52 era Animal Man. You always remember your first, I suppose.
