Hmmm I picked this up because of all the hype surrounding it and it being the pick of the week and all… I guess I was expecting something “more” out of it than most of you.

The story was fine and I appreciated the prose part that helped me get a good grasp of who Animal Man was and is today. Buddy Baker IS a family man and I enjoyed the dialogue between his wife and him and all of a sudden his daughter comes in and just “Daddy, daddy, daddy” him and all of that… for wanting a dog! It’s typical family talk and something everyone can relate to. Then we see A-Man in action, taking out a guy with a punch that just flipped it when his daughter died and takes a hospital in hostage. And the true nature of this book shows itself… horror, family horror, fear of losing those you love. The dream sequence was perfect to vehiculate that! Jeff Lemire just won himself a new follower!

But… Travel Foreman, well, simply put, his art is not my style at all. It works and the dream sequence is particularly impressive but the rest was just…devoid of textures, of details of something special. But I see why some people like his art and I respect that, at least its “good” if not “very good” (for me).

I’ll stick with this one for a bit, I’m curious to see where it goes and I have to admit that it’s good to read something different concerning superheroes for once!
