O.M.A.C. was never someone I cared for or knew much about so DC’s New 52 gave me a chance to be a new reader and give the character a try. After finishing “O.M.A.C.” #1 I have to say I had fun with it. Keith Giffen and Dan DiDio write the issue which really does a nice job of being both a character introduction for new readers and a first part of a pretty cool story arc. There’s some really well executed sci-fi elements to the story that tend to work much better than the few attempts we get at human character development. The issue is action packed and O.M.A.C. at times feels like a mohawked, computer generated Hulk. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing. There’s a lot of fun to be found when O.M.A.C is flexing his muscles.

The art is at it’s strongest when O.M.A.C. is punching, kicking, and destroying. Not only is he written a lot like Hulk but the action pages look like what you would find in a Hulk book. They are vibrant, colorful, are beautifully rendered. There are plenty a cool explosions and scenes of destruction that just fly off the pages. The only visual weak spot is with the human characters. All of the faces look fairly similiar and none of the human depictions look all that attractive. As long as O.M.A.C. is in action the art is solid but past that….

Even though it’s a little weak on the human side, O.M.A.C. is one of the early surprises of DC’s New 52. It’s fun, high octane action and there’s enough going on with the story to get me back for another issue. I’m hoping that Giffen and DiDio manage to give the human characters more personality and not just rely on page after page of action. If they can do that they’ve got a real keeper on there hands.
