So far almost every book I’ve read of the New 52, I’ve been able to decide straight away whether I would be sticking around for the next issue or not.
But I have to admit that this is the one book that really has me confused – I can’t make up my mind if this is a title I want to follow or not. It has lots of good points, chief among which are the terrific art and colouring. The spirit of Jack Kirby lives on in this artwork, and I firmly believe that you do not want to fuck around with the spirit of Jack Kirby. What little story we are given in this brief opening chapter is pretty good fun, with lots of weird and crazy ideas flying around. And yet….And yet, there’s nothing here storywise that really pulls me in and makes me want more. None of the characters are well enough defined at this point to hold my interest, and given the style of the book, I don’t know if that will change as the series progresses… Based on the art, I’m going to give this one more issue to convince me, and if Didio and Giffen don’t make the grade, at least I’ll have two issues of powerful and dynamic visuals to look at every now and again when I’m in a Kirby kinda mood….

Story: 3 - Good
Art: 5 - Excellent
