More DC #1s: Blue Beetle and Suicide Squad!

Two more DC #1s coming at you, courtesy of CBR and Newsarama:

Blue Beetle #1 written by Tony Bedard and drawn by Ig Guara & Ruy Jose

The only surpise in this announcement is how long they took to make it. DC is very high on Jaime Reyes and getting his own book was a near certainty. Ig Guara is a really nice get by DC. He's a huge talent.

Suicide Squad #1 written by Adam Glass and drawn by Marco Rudy

The team is made up, for now, of Harley Quinn, Deadshot, and King Shark. But if you know anything at all about the Suicide Squad, you know that the line-up is… fluid.

Tomorrow… Superman!

  1. Slockhart Slockhart says:

Glad to see they kept Blue Beetle mostly unchanged.

Harley Quinn on the other hand? Kinda makes me embarrassed.

  2. siraim siraim says:

This version of Harley creeps me out.

  3. heylook heylook says:

I’m really tired of the redesigned characters having this Mech-style makeover. Deadshot has the coolest mask ever, they shouldn’t change that one.

  4. sgrsickness sgrsickness says:

    ewwwwww.

  5. Paul Montgomery PaulMontgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

Is Adam Glass the other guy from Tenacious D?

Anyway, these both look exciting. It’d be an absolute insult if Jamie hadn’t made the cut given the mission statement.

  6. Not a fan of that Harley Quinn….makes me worried what the new Joker is gonna look like.

  7. origamikid origamikid says:

    I’m calling this right now:

JMS will be doing an ongoing/monthly continuation of the Superman: Year One story.

Considering how well it sold, it makes sense that DC would want to continue it in the most fluid way possible… an ongoing instead of a ‘Year Two’ graphic novel would make sense.

  8. mrlogical mrlogical says:

Cool!  I’ve never read a Blue Beetle book, but after reading Generation Lost, I’m curious to try it out.  And Suicide Squad could be fun.  The last couple of days of announcements have been a lot more interesting to me than the earlier stuff.  I’m going to end up buying a pretty high percentage of the 52 #1s, a good number of interesting books to try out.

  9. bgavino says:

These books look pretty good actaully.  Though Deadshot looks a little weird on that cover.

@TheNextChampion I would not be surprised if the new look for The Joker is the Heath Ledger Dark Knight look more than anything else.

  10. daccampo daccampo says:

    @PaulMontgomery  Hah!

I’m actually now VERY curious to see how Glass handles his Flashpoint: Legion of Doom series. I think maybe he was the co-writer on the Luke Cage Noir book a couple years back that was VERY good.

And I know he’s a producer on Supernatural, which actually has some pretty good writing. So I’ve got some high hopes, as Suicide Squad is one of my favorite DC concepts. And if this works, I’ll have it twice over with this book and The Thunderbolts at Marvel! ;)

  11. No no no no. No, I don’t like this. DC needs the Secret Six, not the Suicide Squad or to you know not have Harley Quinn in the Suicide Squad.

  12. RoiVampire RoiVampire says:

Suicide Squad with King Shark! Yes!

  13. flakbait flakbait says:

Is that the American McGee version of Harley Quinn?

  14. ericwilder ericwilder says:

So, no superman yet. Did i miss that?

  15. Heroville Heroville says:

Bleeding Cool has three of the Superbooks, all that’s missing is Action – which is hopefully Morrison’s book.

Which mean I guess no JSA and no real place for Wally West.

  16. SuperLuigi says:

NICE!  Connor’s right.  Ig is awesome.

  17. RoiVampire RoiVampire says:

Really like that new harley design. looks like DV8 to me

  18. ericwilder ericwilder says:

    No Powergirl title either.

  19. Bluestreak says:

these seem promising. I like Bedard, LEGION was pretty good but I’m over another GL related so this seems like a good alternative

  20. jsbigman says:

    Where is:

    Power Girl
    Batman Beyond
    JSA
    Booster Gold
    Secret Six

  21. MrChrisB says:

Without Winick/Basri, I was gonna drop PG anyway. Kinda disappointed Wally is off the map. Oh well, I guess I should consider him retired and happy.

  22. stuclach stuclach says:

Glad to see Blue Bettle is coming back.

  23. Paul Montgomery PaulMontgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

Deadshot looks a little like an Evangelion unit. 00 or 02.

  24. NawidA NawidA says:

What the hell happened to Harley? I didn’t mind it in Arkham Asylum, but man the TAS design is fucking perfect.

  25. Heroville Heroville says:

    @jsbigman  Booster is in JLI

  26. I like that none of the characters in Suicide Squad look like how they’re supposed to.

I’m not sure “like” is the right word. Maybe more like “am confused by the fact”.

What does this mean for the Secret Six, I wonder?

  27. BC1 BC1 says:

I would assume Power Girl would be announced with the Superman family.

Harley Quinn looks – ah hell, just say it, slutty.  She’s also apparently one of Sin’s Chosen.

  28. party party says:

I don’t really care either way about Suicide Squad, but Jaime!!! WOO

  29. Bryce31 Bryce31 says:

I thought all the women would be wearing pants now. Way to go back on your word DC.

  30. aboris26 says:

Looks like the DC properties missing from the reboot are (with 4 Superman books coming tomorrow):
    - Justice Society
    - Adventure Comics
    - SHAZAM!
    - Atom

    - Power Girl (may just be gone all together)
    - Question
    - Spectre

    - Sandman

    - Starman

    - Gotham Central L

    - Amethyst (is referenced in Flashpoint)
    - WildC.A.T.S.

    - Gen13
    - T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents

    - Red Circle properties aka Shield/Web/Fly
Milestone properties other than Static Shock aka Xombi/Hardware/Icon/Blood Syndicate/Shadow Cabinet

    - Deadman (DC Presents)
    - Superman Family (Lois Lane/Jimmy Olsen)
    - Superman/Batman or World’s Finest (Yay!)
    - DC Cosmic stuff (Comet, Adam Strange, Lobo, Fourth World, R.E.B.E.L.S.)

  31. Heroville Heroville says:

@aboris26  A lot of those haven’t really been appearing in the DCU for a while. I mean did anyone expect a Sandman book?

  32. Heroville Heroville says:

@Bryce31  What word? That was just a rumor.

  33. mikegraham6 mikegraham6 says:

    @Paul Kyle Gas

  34. daccampo daccampo says:

Quality aside, I think Suicide Squad is a slightly cleaner, more marketable concept, and it’s one that I’ve been rooting for. So I don’t fault DC for going with that over Secret Six. I also have no problems with Harley Quinn being on the team — she’s a high profile character, thanks to the video games and animated series, so i think she’s a good fit as an incarcerated criminal forced to work for the government.

  35. WheelHands WheelHands says:

    Why hello, Ms. Quinn.

I bet Mr. J will want you back now.

This definitely looks (at first glance) like a step down from Secret Six. But we’ll see. I’ll give it an arc.

I’m happy for Jaime, but I probably won’t pick BB up at first. Checkin out too many new titles as it is.

  36. andybmcd andybmcd says:

    Suicide Squad looks neat

  37. CountAbyss CountAbyss says:

I know why some of the fan favorites have been cut (Secret Six, Power girl, Etc.) but I just cannot comprehend why there isn’t a JSA book. Those are one of the books, while haven’t been that strong for awhile, would benefit bringing in a great creative team to bring it back to its former glory. #Sigh*

  38. SmokMnky SmokMnky says:

@BC1  if you look at the bleeding cool article it looks like “Supergirl” might be Power Girl re-imagined.

  39. gregbmarcus gregbmarcus says:

@aboris26  Pretty thorough list, I assume they need some firepower for interactions with other characters and for possible future series.

  40. Jeff Reid JeffR (@JeffRReid) says:

Man, I absolutely love the Suicide Squad so I’ll be on that series for a while. But, woof. I’m not liking those character redesigns.

  41. redcracker redcracker says:

What I am going to miss
    Booster gold
Powergirl- really hope it does show up (doubt it) a redesign would have been cool
    Zatana

    What I am getting
JLI- get my booster gold fix, just wish power girl was on the team since she has to book
Blue beetle- wish it could have been blue and gold (booster gold and blue beetle buddy time cop book)
    All- star western

    Curious about
    Jla
    Teen titans
    Swamp thing
    Death stroke

    Where is
    Jsa
    Batman beyond
    Superman beyond

    What happen to
    Stephenie brown batgirl
    Powergirl
    Terra
    Wally west and his family

  42. Bryce31 Bryce31 says:

    @Heroville

    I was only kidding.

  43. Total sidenot:

I kind of wish Blue Beatle looked more like he does on Batman the Brave and the Bold, he looks too old and technoy in the DCU for my tastes. I think he’s cooler simplified no? Seems like artists have such a hard time drawing teenagers like teens?

  44. player1 player1 says:

Kind of meh on both of these, but I wish the creators the best of luck.

  45. bcoop704 bcoop704 says:

Harley lives!!!!!  I was starting to worry about where I would get my monthly Harley Quinn fix!  I am so stoked about this one!!

  46. superkal1978 superkal1978 says:

I like the idea of Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad
never thought I would buy a suicide squad book but I might now!!!!

  47. Nordh Nordh says:

    Yay for Jamie.

    wru PG wru…

  48. superkal1978 superkal1978 says:

    Not too many spots left
I wonder who is going to on the outside looking in
I’m hoping Booster continures in his own title

  49. JNewcomb JNewcomb says:

I like this tweaked harley quinn. Why not I say. Can’t be afraid of change. There’s basically only 4 characters you can’t change the look of. The rest, go fo it!

  50. Sockman Sockman says:

Not a fan of Harley Quinns new design. Wish they would have left that alone in Arkham Asylum.

  51. Xeno Xeno says:

Is it confirmed that they’ll reveal Superman tomorrow? How shocking would it be if there will be no Superman title in DCnU? Hehe.

  52. franksavi franksavi says:

    I hoped for a Ted Kord come back……this is such a downer….

  53. Neb Neb says:

I like both of these announcements.  Ig Guara was great on the Pet Avengers.  I like the idea of Suicide Squad.  It’s Thunderbolts in the DCU.

  54. itsbecca itsbecca says:

While many women super heros get pants, harley gets… well practically nothing. Because we needed another way to show how screwed up she is. Yikes. (I do however want a corset with pockets for throwing knifes now.)

And just so I can contradict myself, Supergirl looks fantastic, even without pants.

Overall, I feel okay. Sad there’s no Atom. While I generally find older books a little hokey, I’ve always loved Ray Palmer, especially his relationship with Barry Allen. Their’s is one of great friendships of the DCU. That is not to say he has to have his own book of course, he often hasn’t. But if he doesn’t have a fair presence I’ll be disappointed.

  55. Joshua Joshua says:

Harley Quinn IS bringing sexy back!! I say to DC, GOOD JOB!!!!!!

  56. convoy83 convoy83 says:

it almost seems cruel that dc is doing this big shake up and Ted has to stay dead :(

  57. POPEvonDOOM POPEvonDOOM says:

Harley Quinn’s outfit is lame, and why is she on suicide squad anyway. Deadshot belongs, Bane belongs BUT harley doesn’t. she is a insane thug sidekick of the joker. I love Harley but she isn’t SUicide Squad material

  58. jmack jmack says:

Rip Secret Six One of dc’s best comics, of all the ones Im going to miss this one stings the most

  59. muddi900 says:

I think Bob Harass is still working for Marvel. Bankrupting Marvel, stifling DC’s trade program and now this; it’s all been one long conspiracy.

Age of Apocalypse and Heroes Reborn, that’s how this looks like.

  60. robbydzwonar robbydzwonar says:

Tony Bedard has proven himself somewhat capable with his current Green Lantern Corps stuff.  I enjoy it just as much as Johns and Emerald Warriors.

I never heard of the other guy though.

  61. RMC RMC says:

I’m on board for Suicide Squad, but I’d be drooling like a maniac for it if they worked Mr. Zsasz in somehow.

  62. Zeppo Zeppo says:

I am gonna give Blue Beetle a try.

That Harley custome? My girlfriend is a big Harley Quinn fan, but she got miffed whenever Tramp-Harley appeared on screen in Arkham Asylum, I don’t see this outfit going down well at all.

  63. MaxD MaxD says:

Well if they are going to have Harely dress like that I do hope they make the title for mature readers, and just go balls out and depict lots of graphic sex.  Because that would be the only interesting thing about this silly reboot.

  64. JimmyF1982 JimmyF1982 says:

Ugh. LOVE Harley Quinn, but I have no idea who that character on the Suicide Squad cover is.

  65. el355 says:
The new look for Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad sorta looks like her design in Arkham City.
  66. JesseCuster says:

Harley Quinn is cool, but not cool on SS.  SS is a bunch of ‘bad guys’ who make a deal or else have something to lose by NOT agreeing to work for the gov’t.  Harley is suppose to be like Joker, unmanageable… how do you make her a team player?  She worked well w/ Ivy and Catwoman, but even that had it’s own dynamic that worked.  Quinn and Deadshot?  Can’t see it.

  67. Mart8El says:

@Heroville  Actually I think the red head speedster in the Teen titans is meant to be Wally West… Don’t even get me started on how it doesn’t make sense to have Tim Drake and Wally West on the same team…. Ughhhhhh… Also what Superbooks was that supposed to link to.. because it doesn’t work…??

  68. Paul Montgomery PaulMontgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

    @Mart8El  It’s Bart.

  69. Mart8El says:

@PaulMontgomery  How do you know it’s bart? Red Hair would suggest Wally.. as Bart has Brown hair… Did I miss an official confirmation that it’s bart??

  70. Paul Montgomery PaulMontgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

@Mart8El  DC confirmed that it’s Bart. I’m looking for the original citation.

  71. Mart8El says:

@PaulMontgomery  And earlier someone said “It’s Bart because it only makes sense time wise with Connor and Tim there”  and that’s a load of crap, because timelines are now thrown out the window. They’re saying this is the DC universe relaunched, but that doesn’t make sense… Batgirl is presented earlier in her career while Damian Wayne is chillin in the new Robin outfit… that timeline in itself is completely out of wack…

  72. Mart8El says:

@PaulMontgomery  Let me know when you find that citation… I’d love to take a read! :)

  73. mattfox7669 says:

    No Ted Kord.Booooooooooooooooooooooooo!

  74. Paul Montgomery PaulMontgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

    @Mart8El  There ya go.

  75. Mart8El says:

@PaulMontgomery  ahh got it. Well good then… at least it doesn’t make it weird for timeline… but it doesn’t explain what happened to Wally… booh for that

  76. ghettojourno ghettojourno says:

Adam Glass and Marco Rudy have a LONG way to go to live up to not only what Gail Simone/Nicola Scott/J Calafiore did on Secret Six, but also what John Ostrander did on the original Suicide Squad.

  77. BenBugenig BenBugenig says:

I don’t know if I like how they made Harley Quinn all super sexified. I’ve always liked how she was always covered up and didn’t show a lot of skin. Sad.

  78. Johnnyola Johnnyola says:

Thank God it’s a Suicide Squad book and not Secret Six!  I can’t wait for this!

  79. kcbkc says:

The original Suicide Squad series by Ostrander is my favorite of all time.  That was 67 of the best issues, made by the best writer, at least in my opinion, in comics.  I have followed the squad through Superboy, Action, Chase to finally get what turned out to be the best thing about Blackest Night, 1 more issue of Suicide Squad.  Well, maybe Starman 81.  So, again I have very high expectations, and I know nothing of the writer or the illustrator.  Combine this could be very great!

  80. boomergirl boomergirl says:

Is it sad that I when I look at the Deadshot and King Shark re-designs part of me wants to scream, “these are not the Deadshot and King shark I know and love”?
