May 7, 2013 11:52 pm This is wonderful stuff. I like the slight awkwardness to everything, without it delving too far into the more "indie comix" trappings. There's still a real understanding of anatomy & movement here – it just feels restrained & twisted a bit to a unique effect.
April 27, 2013 8:42 pm Or grooming him because she'll be leaving maybe...? And that's another thing – I really liked the other "nature's anomaly" in this issue. Like Wood's easing us into the idea that there are mutants or whatever now. If that's the way it's going, then that scene with Mary & the creature (trying to be vague) becomes even more powerful/symbolic.
April 27, 2013 1:15 pm My dad had my brother & me watch "Jaws" on vacation in Florida when we were really young – until my mom came in & made him turn it off. He put on "Monkey Shine" instead. My brother's terrified of monkeys. This issue played on all those primal & cultural fears perfectly, without going over the top.
April 27, 2013 1:12 pm Okay, yeah, I got a digital copy in the interim. And this issue was really, really good. So, was this Wood's definitive statement that Mary is something crazily different than everyone else. No question about it now, right? Declan Shalvey can do fill-ins anytime. Brown's still my favorite on the book, but I really liked Shalvey, especially for this kind of issue.
April 27, 2013 11:14 am Good to hear! I'll check 'em out.
April 26, 2013 11:33 am Yeah, those two are always sick with talent! I jumped over to your blog, Dan, & really dug the work, man. Inkwork especially. I wanted to know (but didn't want to clutter your inbox), do you have anything upcoming besides the Dr Who stuff & the Lost Vegas issue?
April 26, 2013 10:31 am That Man-Thing is amazing. Was this for something, or just for fun? Crazy detailed. And that may be my personal favorite depiction of Supes ever.
April 26, 2013 10:27 am Daaayyyyyyyuuuummmm!!! Dude just pulled out the Shark Bites. Take me back, son. But in seriousness, yeah, that Massive cover shows how ridiculously skilled JPL is. (#10-12 are interlocking covers btw.) It's not just the composition, but also the varied illustration/coloring styles that really separate the elements in these. That Unwritten cover is beautiful too. I love Shimizu's patented linework in the clouds.
April 25, 2013 2:18 pm @Master Destructo – I'd say, there's our answer right there. If Millar & Image gave LCS's a full-refund incentive, then that's probably the entire rationale behind delaying digital so long. They don't want print copies returned to them. And if there's buzz on the book, 3 months is a good amount of time to sell those print copies. Sucks for digital customers, but I bet this is an experiment on Image's part to try to combat that multiple-reprintings issue Stephenson was harking on recently.
April 24, 2013 3:44 pm Very nice review. Just a side note: Issues #10-12 have guest artists; issue #13 Brown returns to main art duties.
