This was pitch-perfect for me. The writing was witty & quick & established its characters. Spurrier doesn’t explain every element, but the war-speak & such gives the sense of a big, elaborate & somewhat foreign world.

The art was great; slightly “cartoony” – in the vein of Guy Davis, James Harren, Tyler Crook – so not TOO cartoonish, but definitely stylized & really interesting & adept. Colors were really, really good too – expressive without overpowering the story.

What stood out to me most were two things… 1.) The pacing was extraordinarily well-executed. It felt full without ever feeling bloated or slowing down. The dialogue built our lead character (& others) naturally but quickly, then got out of the way for the art to drop us into the war-time action. Back & forth & so on… In the span of 22 pages, I am now totally invested in a main character that set out to end his life uselessly.

2.) There are all these seeming tropes that the creators play with – a reality-tv-obsessed society, gunslingers, a talking gorilla, steampunk-esque tech limitations, etc. – but these never feel cheap or cliched. We are given bits of a LOT of information, just enough to intrigue & to wonder about the future of the characters & world.

The art was stylized & kinetic, while Spurrier writes like he assumes an intelligent readership. Everything worked here in unison.

… I’ve bought a lot of #1 issues lately (The Wake, Jupiter’s Legacy, Dream Merchant, etc.), trying to fill a void left by some recently-ended titles – but this is the first I’ll be sticking with, & I am so damn excited to see where it goes from here.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 5 - Excellent

  1. Hell yeah! Looks like I’ll be making the drive. Thanks a million!

    • Cool, let me know what you thought of it after reading. Curious to see if this was custom-tailored to my tastes or just objectively good…

    • Undoubtedly this was very good! All those little touches really set the book in motion, and we get thrown into this new world just like Blue. I know this was gonna be something good the second I noticed the blue eyes in the “blues”. This was well thought-through, the art was AMAZING, a little Sean Murphyish, clean, detailed, “kinetic” is perfect, slightly cinematic too. There’s some mystery going on here. I liked the steam punk weapons. Thanks again for the review, I’m stoked I picked this up. It’s kinda funny: its called Six Gun Gorilla, but at the end if the issue, I was like, “So what the hell’s up with gorilla!?” But it works because Blue is very interesting, and the world(s) are begging for more exploration. Looking forward to #2, and more about this bad ass gorilla.

    • Oh yeah, one more thing: Auchenbran, the psycho that works for the TV network, give me more of him. Is like to see the Gorilla get a piece of him. Guy’s on one page and I already hate him.

  2. Spurrier’s pistol-packin’ simian is going to have a little company this summer:

Yup. That’s right. TWO Six-Gun Gorilla comics. At the same time. What are the odds!? The first issue is available as a digital download for $1.99 at:

I just got my first review at the Ain’t It Cool News Comic Review page:

I really hope that Si doesn’t hold any hard feeling towards me, because I certainly have none towards him. This is obviously a case of what Hollywood refers to as “parallel development” (i.e. VOLCANO and DANTE’S PEAK, ARMAGEDDON and DEEP IMPACT, etc.). If anything, I can’t wait to see what he’s done with the concept. As for mine, it’s just a straight-up Western comic.

    Cheers,

    B
