I held off writing a review and rating for 24 hours – just to let the end to a 5 year run sink in. My initial reaction would have been straight fours across the board. The same level of aptitude that we've come to expect from Wood, Burchielli and company, but nothing to really send it over the top. Nothing that hit you in the face or in the heart and made you stop reading for a minute. Which, honestly, is a pretty good representation of much of the series. But thinking about it overnight, it hit me that the real greatness of this concluding issue isn't the send-off Wood is giving to the series and the city. It's not the solid artwork or the way it works so well in unison with the words. It's that Wood and Burchielli give us a character in Matty Roth who, in the end, truly believes in right and wrong. His involvement in the killings at the end of Parco's reign and his various missteps along the way leave Matty feeling that, yes, despite the government's trumped up charges on him, he really does deserve to spend the rest of his life away from society. He understands the consequences of his own actions and accepts them, even agrees with them. After realizing this, I can't help but feel that Matty Roth's story is more heroic than any superhero comic I've ever read. And above that, it also feels more genuine and very refreshing. Comics in general have turned decidedly darker since most of our childhoods, and it's uplifting to see a character do the right thing because of his own (very human) moral compass – in a book that overall is very adult in content, nonetheless. This epilogue to the story of a young man and a city (both on the brink of change and devastation throughout) may be understated, but when you look closer – just as Matty writes about the civil war tributes hidden around the city – is incredibly powerful.
