I think the poor ratings are mostly due to the art style, which is not bad, but just not Marvel standard fare. It was a little jarring in the first issue, especially since it's so different from the cover style, but I've adjusted this issue, so it's kind of nice. I really love the cover artist, though. I'd like to see that artist do some interiors.
It wasn't what I expected either, but so far it's a fun, solid Mark Waid story, and I laughed out loud a couple of times. It's nice that this story really, really is completely separate from most of Marvel Continuity right now. Rare that I would say that, but it fits given Stephen's current place in the world.
Leonard Kirk's art makes me weak as always, and I've never liked Mystique as much as I do in this mini. Paul Cornell really gets her in a way that makes her accessible as a character for the first time ever.
Also, the Rolling Stone song titles this issue are a really nice touch. I laughed.
November 28, 2009 7:59 pm I'm so sad that 50 is the last issue. I really didn't enjoy War of the Marvels, and it was just insulting that Carol Danvers's death even never made it to any other title she was in before she was resurrected (which I am still trying to understand - will have to reread those issues back to back), but the arc before that was some of the best stuff I've ever read using this character. It was especially neat seeing the return Michael Rossi plus the confrontation with Marvel Boy. I hope there's something else good in store for Carol and Brian Reed.

I pity any artist who has to follow Nicola Scott. Let's give these guys a break!
The cover was gorgeous, and since I don't know much about Black Alice right now, I'm still intrigued.
Hi there, Steve-Rogers-From-Outta-Nowhere.
(I know, I know...)
I hope Rescue (or some iteration of her) is not gone for good. Though I wouldn't mind a name change, heh.
