Quite honestly, I don’t really understand all the fuss over this issue! It was ok, and I enjoyed it enough to stick with the Wonder Woman title for a couple more issues, but it wasn’t pick of the week material for me by a long stretch.
I like Azzarello’s work in general quite a bit, and I know I’m in the minority here, but I’d rather have seen him do more First Wave stuff instead! I really appreciated his economy of words here, and thought that Chiang did a good job of carrying the majority of the story in his artwork and storytelling, but the art style itself (good storytelling aside) really doesn’t do anything for me.
I’m hoping for more insight into Wonder Woman’s character in the months to come, but for now this was a pretty strong start to what could be a really interesting title. Despite my fairly lukewarm reaction, I have to say I’m glad to see Wonder Woman getting a bit more fan attention after years of being marginalised. And hey, they did it without resorting to shameless cheesecake shots and gratuitous sex scenes! Yay!
