Jeff Lemire has done it again.

This was a book that I mocked openly when it was announced back in June. I couldn’t imagine that this character had that many fans, and to be honest, I’d never really read anything that featured him. Even when the Flashpoint mini-series was released, I didn’t pick it up, because I just couldn’t make myself care about Frankenstein.

But in the months that followed, I became quite interested in what people were saying about the book and its writer, Jeff Lemire. So I decided to add it to my pulls this week.

I’m glad I did. I’ve only pulled three books this week (this one, plus Batman and Robin and Batwoman), and so far, this wins the book of the week for me. Lemire does an admirable job of setting the character and his supporting cast in the context of the DCnU, though given the “fun, sci-fi romp” vibe of the book, context may not be all that important, after all. Still, for new readers, there are relatively few continuity traps; the questions are more in the vein of “just what is going on, here?”, and will likely be asked by new fans and established readers alike. This book is crazy fun. I had a blast reading it, and I highly recommend it.

Oh, and the art is really awesome, too. A little…scratchy for my taste, but appropriate, I think, for the tone of the book.
