I decided to pick up this title after reading Jeff Lemire’s excellent Animal Man #1 last week (and it showed as my LCS had only 3 copies left of this when I came in a 2:30PM!)
Reading this, smiling all the way, I can say I had a blast! This isn’t a serious comic, it’s all balls to the walls pure madness and over the top fun.
Frankenstein gets to investigate a town that’s been besieged by monsters on the order of Father Time (in the body of some little girl, nonetheless!). S.H.A.D.E. provides him with a team of monsters all willing to kill, claw and bite their way through the monstrous horde of invaders. The dialogue was full of funny one-liners and absurd concepts, but hey, it works and it even felt like it was a huge parody of SHIELD from Marvel! 1 to that!
The art style of Ponticelli isn’t my cup of tea but it works for this; rough lines and a lack of details when the panel depicts scenes taking place from a distance. Though I really enjoyed the last few pages where the monster brawl took place; it was FUBAR!
I was sad when Xombi got cancelled with the relaunch but I can honestly affirm that this title might replace my crazyness-of-the-month itch! Can’t wait for issue #2!
Jeff Lemire is a name to remember and watch out for now!
