More DC #1s: Tim Drake Lives! The Legion Gets Lost! Static Shock Sees a New Milestone and More

Tim Drake fans, you can uncross your fingers. The last MIA male Robin is accounted for. Let’s take a look at today’s latest batch of DC #1s, courtesy of DC’s Source Blog.

Legion Lost #1 – Fabian Nicieza and artist Pete Woods take a handful of Legionnaires back in time for an homage to the much lauded DnA story line of the same name (out in hardcover this month).

Legion of Super-Heroes #1 – Paul Levitz is at it again minus seven of his vast ensemble. Francis Portella takes on the art.

Teen Titans #1 – Tim Drake’s Red Robin heads up the newly formatted team which also features Wonder Girl and Kid Flash. And rumors of Superboy’s ascent to manhood may have been exaggerated. This one’s written by Scott Lobdell with artists Brett Booth and Norm Rapmund.

Static Shock #1 – Milestone architect John Rozum co-writes with series artist Scott McDaniel. Good to see Virgil Hawkins flying high in the new DCU.

Hawk & Dove #1 – What’s so funny ’bout peace, love, and understanding? Sterling Gates scripts with Rob Liefeld interiors.

Comments

  1. I dig the Superboy tat but not the goth look.

  2. oh snap that Teen Titans looks sick in a super rad 90s way. i shouldn’t like it but i do, especially that kid flash outfit

  3. Totally getting that Paul Cornell legion book.  They finally have a writer on a legion book that I like. The Liefield interiors on Hawk and Dove were a bit unexpected.

  4. Hawk and Dove?  Seriously?

  5. Interesting Red Robin redesign.

  6. Those TeenTitan costume redesigns scream gritty 90s to me. I’m actually kinda stalked for that Liefeld H&D series. His original mini was, in my opinion, his best work. Sad to say todays announcements done excite me as much as yesterday’s 🙁 (2 Legion books?!?!?)

  7. I’m not sure if it’s a positive or a negative, but the overwhelming 90s vibe of many of these announcements (in terms of creative teams and visual styles) is intriguing.

  8. Should say “stolked” instead of stalked 😛

  9. I guess I’m just confused.  The more that we go forward, the less change I actually see rather than a few rollbacks and getting Babs out of the chair…what’s changing here other than everything’s getting a #1?  I hated losing Tim, but it made a kind of sense because if we were deaging characters how are there room for all these Robins?  Meh, I dunno.  I just makes less sense from the original ‘all-new, rebooted’ standpoint as more things are announced.  Ron’s dead-on btw.  They just don’t have the creator depth on their roster to support these books.

  10. @JimmyF1982  That makes sense, I was puzzled about the reference to Cornell’s being “at it again,” I thought I’d missed something.

  11. WTF? Those costume redesigns for the Teen Titans looks as bad as those costume redesigns of Marvel in the late 90’s. And while we’re on the topic of Teen Titans, it seems Tim Drake got the shorter end of the stick. Dick(Nightwing) and Todd(Red Hood and the Outlaws) got their own books, and Tim doesn’t? Teen Titans is its own thing and being the leader of it is not the same thing as having his own book. <sigh>

  12. Sign me up for all five please.

  13. Avatar photo Paul Montgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

@bgavino  It’s Paul Levitz on the Legion book. My mistake. Got my Pauls crossed.

  14. Liefeld too? It really is 1994 at DC again!

  15. That Teen Titans cover is the sexiest thing I’ve seen since…well that’d be telling. But HOT DAMN is that an awesome cover!

  16. Avatar photo Jeff Reid (@JeffRReid) says:

I find Static Shock to be interesting. A reboot of his series was originally scheduled for May, but the solicit was cancelled about a month after it was written. Between then and now, the writer for the series was changed. Originally, Felicia Henderson was going to be writing. Now, it appears that John Rozum and Scott McDaniel have taken over.

  17. I’m probably the only person thinking/wishing this:  I want DC to go farther (further?) with this reboot.  I want a total continuity reboot.  Too much of the old history is making the transition over.  I want a clean, 1985 style back to basics approach. As much as I love the characters, Connor Kent and Tim Drake shouldn’t exist right now.

Okay, I’m done.  Grumble mode off!

  18. Excited for Legion Lost! And kind of excited for the TT, but…

“Tim Drake is forced to step out from behind his keyboard when an international organization seeks to capture or kill super-powered teenagers. As Red Robin, he must team up with the mysterious and belligerent powerhouse thief known as Wonder Girl and a hyperactive speedster calling himself Kid Flash in TEEN TITANS #1”

The solicitation and the costumes (and the writer) all scream FROM THE NINETIES to me… But I really want it to be good. Fingers crossed.

  19. @MattKelly  That’s a misconception about Crisis. It didn’t wipe away those kind of characters. The young sidekicks pre-Crisis existed post-Crisis. Jason Todd was still Robin pre- and post-Crisis.

  20. Yikes. Don’t wanna hate, but Hawk & Dove? Liefeld? Really? Must be nice for alot of these old Marvel guys (Lobdell, Nicieza, Liefeld) to have Bob Harras as EIC.

Not sure yet if it’s a good thing.

  21. With Bob Harras at the helm we are getting Rob Liefeld, Scott Lobdell, and Greg Capullo…

  22. Phew! Ya had me worried, DC.

Tim’s costume is … interesting. Still wish they’d change the name. “Red Robin” has yet to grow on me. I keep waiting for him to come bop, bop, bobbin along and give me a cheeseburger.

The other Titans are definitely rocking a 90s vibe, and much to my surprise I’m fine with it. Everything comes back around. However, is Conner’s symbol taped to the back of his shirt? Cuz that’s just weird.

As for the rest of these, not much here for my tastes. Never been a Legion fan. Happy for Static but I’ll probably pass. And I’ve just now reached the point where just seeing Liefeld’s name in print makes me wretch. Took longer than I thought.

  23. @RoiVampire  @KenOchalek  I’m getting the same 90’s vibe but I’m excited about Teen Titans and I’ve never picked up the book before.

  24. Avatar photo Paul Montgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

The new Red Robin costume >>> the old Red Robin costume. Looks more like a Robin, less like the also dope Doc Mid-Nite.

  25. I’m going to agree with those that state TT looks like it’s from the 90s. I hope it does well, and hopw Lobdell can write convincing teens in 2011.

  26. @Pumatastic  I was thinking the same thing, hardly anyone has mentioned Harras during this, it’s all been Johns and Lee

  27. Don’t understand why they didn’t just pull the cast from Young Justice into Teen Titans, or just make Young Justice the new status quo in the comics. That show in great and the characters are really original (Miss Martian & Aqualad).

  28. I really like Liefeld’s Hawk and Dove book in the 80’s, but it is kind of sad that he can’t escape the orbit of his past work. I’m definetly in for Legion and Legion Lost Although Dawnstar and Gates are the two Legionaires least likely to get “Lost”.
I’m really suprised they would tinker that much with Teen Titans. They just got back to a solid team with Aqualad on the way. Those 90’s redesigns scream “These are not the Titan’s you know/love.” I would bet this will be the first book to get a second overhaul.
Where’s Nicola Scott? Could she be doing Superman?

  29. Rob Liefeld interiors are actually the biggest surprise to me so far.  Of these I’ll probably just stick with Levitz’s Legion.

  30. y’know, if that cover is any indication, Liefeld’s art has improved a lot since the old days.  It might even be tolerable.

Beyond that, I don’t quite get it though. Isn’t Liefeld doing a non-Image book quite the BFD? It seems like DC is burying the lede a little bit with this one.

  31. @Pumatastic  Who knows with the reboot but I’m going to bet that DC still has a Young Justice comic based off the show. Maybe they are hoping fans of the show will pick up both.

  32. @Pumatastic

I was kind of expecting the same thing (Young Justice becoming the status quo). That said, we haven’t seen the Martian Manhunter yet (meaning the whole Martian physiology could be redesigned), so maybe the young lady crawling on the ground in the Teen Titans cover IS a revamped Miss Martian?

  33. Good to see Static Shock in the lineup, fits with DC’s diversity imperative. Also glad to see Rozum get more chances at a monthly. I would like to see the book he’s currently spinning (XOMBI) stick around, but that’s a pipe dream in the new DC.

If I don’t see Frazier Irving as an artist on any of these new titles, than DC is telling me they’ve really dropped the ball with their cultivating new talent. He’s probably one of the rising star artist in comics right now and he’s been doing mostly DC work.

  34. @mmyoung  It’s not really a big deal. He’d been doing a Deadpool book at Marvel for a while.

  35.  @bgavino It’s Paul Levitz, not Paul Cornell.

  36. I’ll ask again: Is that symbol TAPED to Conner’s back?!

  37. Is that still Cassie as Wonder Girl? She looks very Donna-ish. I’m wondering if they’re just going to smoosh them together.

  38. @WonderAli: I think Donna’s gonna be part of JLI. It certainly looks like her on the cover and she’s sporting a “W” shape.

  39. Uh…I also question their Hawk and Dove choice for an ongoing series. It hasn’t exactly been a high-seller in past versions, has it?

  40. @WheelHands  it’s kryptonian ducktape

  41. I’ll pass on all 5 of these. None of the creative teams excite me…

  42. @RoiVampire: Haha. It’s lame is what it is. Not too mention trashy. Clark really needs to let him know that he’s got a mantle to maintain. “No halfbreed clone of mine uses ducktape on his costume!”

  43. @conor That’s a good point and I’m glad you reminded me of that.  A Crisis/Flash Point comparison would probably make a good article for the site!

And of course I’m pre-judging and speculating on something we really don’t know much about.  I guess I just feel that if we truly want to make this “new universe” appeal to the uninitiated, DC should cut as much of the glut as possible.  For example, I tried to explain the Robin lineage to my wife recently and I totally lost her.

But I’m not going to be a dick (no pun intended to Mr Grayson) and write all of this off.  The writers and artists are all capable people with an exciting task ahead of them.  I wish them the best.

  44. @WheelHands: I wish I knew.  That is some seriously wonkly redesign right there.  The tattoo and all black garb I can deal with, but a taped on S-shield?  Seriously?

I get more worried for the Superman line of titles as each day ticks by (but that’s nothing new for frustrated Superman fans over the last five years or so).

  45. I don’t know how I feel about Red Robin reminding me of Black Condor every time I look at him…

  46. I’m really disappointed in the new Teen Titans look. I was expecting something more for Tim. Especially since he took an even larger role (not a major role though) after the death of Bruce Wayne.

  47. I bet millions of new readers will be flocking to their ipads for Hawk and Dove 1.  There are a lot of these new titles that I don’t think will be around a year after they come out.

  48. Legion Lost has all but one of my favorite Legion characters(Mon-El), so I’m sold.  Also Portella rocks so I’m down for both Legion books. Maybe Static.

I think DC Digital should offer cheaper package deals on groups of these new #1s.   I know right now it’s not the price point but 10 new #1’s for 10 bucks would be awesome.

  49. The Teen Titans cover looks like something I would’ve read back in college (fitting, I guess, since it’s Lobdell and Booth and I was big into Wildstorm at the time), but that’s the only one of these books that really interests me. I’m still keeping my fingers crossed that Stephanie will show up in one of these announcements.

  50. Jim Lee, Rob Liefeld.  All we need is to change Jimmy Olson to a girl & this IS Heroes Reborn Redux.

  51. So Superboy didn’t have time to stop at a screenprinting shop after the reboot?  Just a kinkos?

  52. Is that Deathbird in the bottom of Teen Titans(kidding)

The 90’s vibe is cool but if it’s abused this will tank pretty fast.

Don’t fuck it up Jim Lee!

  53. Red Robin looks like The Falcon from Marvel.

  54. Is there a threat of a Rob Liefeld book actually reaching past one issue before it stops shipping because of missed deadlines?

  55. Superboy looks like he just came off of filming an episode of Jersey Shore.

  56. The Legion stuff looks alright, I suppose.

And while I’m damning with faint praise…

The taped-on Superboy logo gives us something more ridiculous than the walking JMS Superman to have fun with for a while.

  57. Personally, I think that after the initial month or two, DC sales are going to drop dramatically. Which is so sad since the majority of my favorite characters are in DC.

  58. I didn’t think things could get any worse.

  59. @RoiVampire  that is an awsome way to sum it up!!!!

  60. @TomO: I don’t think that this book will be around for that long of a period of time. The only way I see this (Teen Titans) book surviving is if it changes the costumes and artists, and probably writer too. It may be ok for a few issues, but then I can see people getting tired of it.

  61. Not a DC fanoy, but the new Teen Titans and Red Hood and The Outsiders have be extremely excited.

  62. Robin does look like Falcon- I hope he can fly with those things and not just glide.

  63. The Teen Titans cover looks awful – I feel like someone should apologize to Cassie. If you had blindfolded me and said ‘Lobdel on Teen Titans’ I would have bought it, but that cover is a deal killer.

Static Shock looks promising, but as someone who read the original Milestone series (and watched the cartoon!) I fear it will end up with recycled story lines.

I would totally buy a Hawk & Dove series after Brightest Day…..as long as it wasn’t drawn by Liefeld. His art makes my eyes hurt. I might give #1 a shot but I can’t see sticking with it.

So, on the whole, I’m underwhelmed with today’s drop. I may end up reading fewer DC books after the reboot than I do now.

  64. Odd to see people complaining about Nicieza.  I thought everyone loved his recent Red Robin run?  I guess it’s just cool to complain sometimes….

  65. The Superboy taped-logo-cape thing is kind of reminiscent of a crust punk safety-pinning a patch onto a shirt. I could see duct tape being used for the same purpose in that scene. So maybe this is our “Eff you Dad, I’m a punk rocker!” version of Superboy (kind of like he was in the early 90s, as much as I hate to make the conenction).

  66. I am digging the new Teen Titans book.  Can’t wait for it to drop.

  67. I’m glad time lives! but he needs more pouches…

  68. So glad that Pete Woods is part of this reboot, even if it is Legion Lost.

  69. Not to fond of the new teen titans look, and can’t figure out why go so literal with Robin.

  70. @KenOChalek: It looks that way with everyone’s costume in Teen Titans now, not just Superboy’s.

@SuperLuigi: I did love his run on Red Robin, still do. I wish he was writing Teen Titans or a solo Tim Drake book. For that matter, lets get Pete Woods as artist too.

  71. BTW, New Teen Titans cover looks SWEEET!  Always been a Booth fan.  Also, great to see John Rozum in the creative line-up!

  72. I’m glad to see Sterling Gates get a title. We haven’t heard much from him lately and I think he’s a guy that shows a lot of promise.

I just wish DC would bring in some fresh, new female writers. So far we’ve only got Gail Simone on one title…

  73. Yeah….not gonna lie I am not interested in these. But it’s coolthat Liefeld is doing a DC book. Has he ever done DC before?

  74. Wow. I want exactly none of these books. Those Titans look…….. there are no words.

  75. @Kirkerson – Gail’s on one and a half – cowriting Firestorm and writing Batgirl, but I’m still hoping she’ll have another. My thought on Firestorm was that she would co-write for a while to help Ethan Van Sciver get up to speed as a writer, then move on.

Speaking of Gail, that’s now 39 of the 52 new titles shown…..the Secret Six  deatwatch continues.

  76. I’m not a fan of Liefeld but I did love the 80s Hawk & Dove. I also DO very much love Sterling Gates. I wish he was paired with Igle, but I’m willing to give it all a chance.

  77. @TheNextChampion  He used to do Hawk and Dove back in the day.  Old stomping grounds for Liefeld.

  78. @KenOchalek: Your optimism is admirable, and your rationalization sound. But lame is lame. And no superhero should choose to tape his symbol on his costume, much less a member of the Superfamily.

  79. @TheNextChampion  He also did a few issues of Teen Titans a few years ago

  80. I’m getting the distinct feeling that DC is throwing the baby out with the bathwater for a lot of these (specifically Teen Titans).

  81. This batch of announcements really makes me worry about some books. What about some second tier books like Zatanna and Power Girl? What about the JSA? I know there are still a lot of books yet to be announced, but you have to figure the Super-books are going to be a good portion of them. When I see Hawk and Dove and TWO Legion books it definitely makes me worry for the second tier books I am really digging now.

  82. At least Tim Drake is not dead. I’ve ever only read a few issues of Teen Titans and wasn’t too fond, but will be trying it out again since it seems like it will be the only book with Tim in it.

I thought Red Robin was selling quite an amount of books, so why get rid of those sales DC?

Might pick up Legion Lost since the story sounds interesting. No interest in the other books.

  83. @mmyoung  No. No it isn’t any better.

Why do I need to see two images of each of the characters on the cover? Could someone explain that thought process to me?

Let’s see, I need to fill this background with something. I know! How about the two title characters with their namesakes directly next to them in a thrilling 2X2 composition! How else will people know which one is Hawk and which one is Dove? I am awesome!

Liefeld doing any work at all is a BFD to me. Image makes sense only because he helped found it, but everything else baffles me.

  84. Wow, those Teen Titan costumes are bad.  Really bad.  90’s bad.  Yesterday’s announcements were good, today’s are meh, although apparently Ron is getting his wish and the guy who writes “Who Is Jake Ellis?” is writing Grifter according to Bleeding Cool.  Sadly these announcement are not only just boring, but I think reflect the limited thinking of Harras.  Stop using your “go-to” guys and bring in some new talent.  Especially when the go-to’s are pretty much universally considered to be poor writers and epitomize what was wrong with comic writing in the 90’s.  Comics should be fun, not dumb.

  85. For what it’s worth, Brett Booth comments over on his blog that the image posted by DC of the new Teen Titans was a piece that they worked up for one of their meetings, and not the actual cover.

     http://demonpuppy.blogspot.com/
Hopefully, someone told them to lose the tape between then and now.

  86. that Hawk and Dove… it has feet, an in general isn’t too bad…. let’s hope it stays that way, they are my favorite team up to come out of Blackest Night

  87. Even if it is not the actual cover, it still looks pretty cool. I like that gag that Booth put in the art, with Kid Flash taping that “S” to Superboy’s back.

  88. Alright. No one else is saying it, but I am so glad Sterling Gates is back on a book.  His absence has been felt in my stack of comics when he stopped writing Supergirl. He got me to care about her, so Hawk and Dove is going to be a perfect book for him.

  89. @JohnnyHorror92182

Huh, I don’t think anyone considered that it might be a gag. Nice thinking. I’m not sure it’s correct (why would he tape a Superman symbol to his back when he’s got the tattoo on his arm?), but it does help explain it.

  90. Also, what are we thinking about Kid Flash? Bart or Wally? Both are currently unaccounted for.

  91. WE HAVE A LIEFELD BOOK! Looks like the Marvel Zombies that compaired this to Hero’s Reborn were precient. Just kiddin’. I’m still excited!

  92. What in the sweet hell is up with that Titans cover?

  93. Legion is the best looking of the bunch.

    Teen Titans is fascinatingly ugly.

Hawk and Dove could not be less interesting if it tried.

Just covers and such, but this batch looks like the first big miss.

  94. @KenOchalek: I would assume it’s Bart. So far they haven’t given any of the legacy heroes the ax. But I’m fine if it’s Wally. As long as I get SOME Wally!

  95. Avatar photo Paul Montgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

I got to deliver the news of Tim’s continued existence to a concerned but totally pleasant fellow fan at the comic shop today. Big smile.

  96. That titans cover is just…I don’t even know. At first I thought I’d ran on the cosmic treadmill and was back in the 90’s.

  97. @Heroville  A lot of awesomeness, that’s what

  98. Aside from the taped up “S”, I think the new Titan re-designs look SICK! I never like Cassie’s other look, and always thought the Kid Flash costume was too old-school looking.  One of the biggest differences between Marvel and DC, is the Marvel characters look WAY less dated than alot of DC’s.  I know some of the older readers on here liked them.  But for today’s teeagers, DC’s characters never really pass the eye test.  Superman’s underwear, WW’s old costume, etc. just don’t connect with the under-30 crowd.  Props to DC for trying to modernize the line.

  99. I’ll definently check out the Static book. The rest I don’t know yet.

  100. I’m very happy to hear that Tim will continue to exist.  I like his uniform, too.

  101. I read Teen Titans through Felicia Henderson’s god awful run, and even I’m going to be dropping it now.

  102. The Static Shock book and the Legionaires one look good.

Really though? No Stephanie Brown or Cassandra Cain book but we’re getting a fucking Hawk and Dove book by Liefeld. Ugh. Way to be DC. That Teen Titans are is awful also.

  103. I’m glad to see that Tim made it through, but I’m not a huge fan of the costume.  That said, each of these titles seem to hold some interesting promise.  Not sure which I’ll get yet, but it’s a safe bet I’m getting a couple of them.

  104. I’m really diggin’ Tim’s new costume. Also TT might be the only book I pick up from this batch, despite the cover…not lookingso great. Gotta stay possitive.

  105. Glad Tim is back. Really not digging the Falcon look, though. Or the merged Kid Flash/Impulse look on Bart.

  106. Is that Voodoo from Wildstorm on the bottom of the Titans cover?

  107. You mean to read Red Robin I have to deal with the Teen Titans? At least its not written by Krul.

  108. I find it interesting that most people can agree things are looking a bit 90’s, but we’re completely split on people who hate it and people who love it. I’m not… angry or anything. But I definitely find it really weird. He has wings? I can play along when bat books tell me the cape is made of a special fabric that is fluid one minute and a perfectly solid for gliding the next. Crazy Wayne tech. But wings. That’s just. Kind of silly. Inhibits gliding and I’m not sure you can be hiding in the shadows very wrapping your bright red wings around you. Plus, all the random extra patches, pockets, belts and… he’s wearing knee pads… And I could be wrong but I think we may just be looking at some fingerless leather gloves on that left hand there.  *cringe*

But it doesn’t matter that much, I won’t be reading. The only person who’s ever sucessfully gotten me to read Teen Titans was Karl Kerschl.

  109. Interesting choices.

Legion — you can’t really do much to drastically reboot it. I mean, Legion’s been rebooted more than anyone. What’re they gonna do that’s more dramatic a shift than, say, the 5-Year Gap Legion? Or the Legion Lost? Or the Waid/Kitson reboot? So… yeah… this seems about right, I guess, but it’s just sort of flat for me.

Teen Titans — Well, you can’t say they’re just rearranging deck chairs with this one. The description on other websites makes me think this is a full reboot — I get the impression that this Tim was never a Robin (probably necessary to de-age Bats a little), and this is a new version of Wonder Girl (a thief?). This definitely does seem to be an Image-ization of the Titans. It doesn’t seem like it’s really for me, but I applaud them trying to do something different with the characters.

Static Shock – Glad to see Rozum on a book. I very well might pick this up for him and a little fondness for the Mileston character.

Hawk and Dove — Bold move to get Liefeld back on the series that launched his career back in the day. I worry about longevity, and I worry about a sense of treading old ground rather than moving forward… but this is definitely an interesting one. I wonder if H&D can really sustain an audience.

  110. I find it interesting that most people can agree things are looking a bit 90’s, but we’re completely split on people who hate it and people who love it. I’m not… angry or anything. 111. Wow exciting news, Legion Lost is my all time favorite Legion story and it featured a young Olivier Coipel! Can’t believe it’s FINALLY getting the trade treatment

And it’s great that Tim Drake is alive, even if his new costume is a bit weird

  112. Seriously though, those might be the worst costumes I’ve ever seen on the cover of Teen Titans.

You thought a T-shirt with a ‘Superman’ logo was bad, look at what Connor is wearing now! Why Jim Lee thought that was a good idea is anyone’s guess.

  113. Yeah.  Thems costumes is BAD.

  114. I really wanted to like this. I really did. I was hoping it would draw me back to DC. But almost nothing looks exciting. Probably because there’s just so much of everything. The one thing always holding me back from really getting into DC is this sprawling mess of continuity and conectivity that requires 3 hours spent on the internet to follow stories that aren’t that great to begin with. Marvel seems to be trying to emulate this model as closely as possible making me drop almost everything from them. I’ll probably just pick up Superman IF Morisson turns out to be writing it (which he probably will be, there doesn’t seem to be much else left for him to do…)

  115. It’s been said before and I will say it again, how is this a reboot? It really appears to be a shake up in the DC organization more than a new status quo in the DCU.

  116. First thing I noticed on Hawk – proportionate ankles!

  117. another day another list of books I don’t care about. ugh.

  118. I kind of dig the late 90s take on the new Teen Titans.  At the least you can’t say that DC wasn’t trying something different.  My only gripe, and it’s the biggest flub in the DC Reboot, is Goth Superboy.
Does anybody here have someone that is Goth that they find the least bit likable?  That and there is no way in hell would Superboy in his God-like powers go Goth.  Teenagers that adopt this attitude are full of angst and are raling against society for their meekness and insecurities.  Even in Connor is living in Superman’s shadow, he’s still well within 99.999th percentile in societies’ eyes and would be held in such high regard that he would never go Goth.  Unbelievable and poor characterization.

  119. @PraxJarvin Ironically, Liefeld’s cover is the only one with feet aside from Static’s. Plus, it’s the only one with hands not in a fist (aside from Static’s again, but I’m not sure if it counts when they’re obscured by energy.)

  120. I liked the good ‘ol boy, logo on the t-shirt and normal jeans, thing Connor had going.  Then again, I’ma redneck.

  121. @impulse Death in Sandman has a goth-vibe and is SOOOO likeable. She’s one of my favorite characters.

  122. @KenOchalek  I didn’t notice it at first either, Ken. But after studying the pic for awhile, and looking at Kid Flash pointing at it, well 2+2=4.

Once again, Kid Flash taped the “S” to Superboy’s back, people. It isn’t a fashion statement.

  123. @itsbecca  You gotta love how the fingers in Hawk’s hands appear to be tapering off from pointer to pinky, because we all know that the longest finger is the pointer (if you would be so good as to look at your hands…) You’re right about the feet, though you can kind of see one of Impulse’s.

@azrael1213  That’s because Death of the Endless is what any goth is looking for: Someone to listen to all your whining and comfort you. Most likeable anthropomorphication of death ever. (Discworld’s being a close second)

  124. TIM! Okay, I feel better now.  Static Shock and Teen Titans, added to the list.

  125. Now Image United is never gonna finish.

  126. Rob Liefeld. Quit it.

  127. I’ll probably pick up at least the first issue for Teen Titans for some Red Robin action.  Though I was in on a conversation on twitter about that cover, it looks like a DC/TopCow crossover.

Wonder Girl looks a lot like Magdalena.
Woman crawling on the ground, seems like Witchblade.
Woman in black, is Sabine aka wielder of Wheel of Shadows, with Emberstone for some fire effects.

  128. I’m pretty sure it’s been said on the podcast before, but Conner Kent is a white farmboy from Kansas, being raised by a loving elderly woman who would do anything for him. Therefore he should be a juggalo.

  129. every single pic ive seen of Liefields art recently the right eye of his characters is twice as far away from the nose and higher than the left one. Check out the pages for the Infinite in the last previews and hawk on his cover here.

  130. Heh, the taped-up “S” is clearly a joke from Impulse/KidFlash/whatever he will be called. Makes the comments freaking the hell out about the costume all the funnier.

  131. I read elsewhere that Titans is a reboot, not a start over. That this would be the first time Superboy meets up with Red Robin and Wondergirl.

Other than that, these titles seem lacking next to yesterday’s announcements. Is it to early to place bets on which book will get cancelled first, or which one misses a deadline?

    Cancelled first:
    Batwing or Hawk and Dove.

    Miseses a deadline?
Flash, Hawk and Dove or Batman The Dark Night.

  132. @Impulse  How exactly is a “’90’s take” trying something different. Isn’t it trying something from 15 years ago?

  133. This would be the perfect time to debut Chloe Sullivan as Watchtower in the DCU.

  134. Not feeling the Teen Titans costumes, but curious how the new book turns out.

  135. Still waiting on news about Wally West. It’s been about 3 years now, and so far any faith I had in Geoff Johns and Dan Didio to preserve the character appear to be unfounded.

  136. @mikegraham6

    ‘Stoked’
    http://www.thefreedictionary.com/stoked

its derived from the term ‘stoke’ as in, you stoke a fire to get it to flame back up.

  137. @Devastron

Uhh…  they already announced a new JSA title.
Zatanna looks to be a HUGE part of JL Dark.

@ everyone else…um, not too crazy about Red Robin wings… but… ahh… you all do understand that the name ‘Robin’ refers to a bird, right?  Red Robin has robin like wings.

  138. Wait….on the cover of Hawk and Dove, are those…..FEET?!
    Mr Liefeld, take a bow.

  139. Avatar photo Jeff Reid (@JeffRReid) says:

I just realized that Aqualad isn’t on the Teen Titans team. You’d think that with the push from the Young Justice TV show and his debut in Brightest Day, he’d be at the forefront of a teen group in the standard DCU. Perhaps he’ll only be in the Young Justice comic that’s currently out from DC Kids line. Seems like a missed step for synergy.

  140. Virgil Hawkins in his own book, finally!
I have been waiting for this for a while.

  141. I hope that is Bart sporting the new Kid Flash costume and not Wally West.

  142. @ActualButt – Is there another comic out there that is bringing back the 90s look n’ feel?  Granted most of the comics at that time were mainly style over substance but so was Disco music.  Enjoyable, ultimately vapid but has a place in this world.
At one point a Silver-age feel for comics was at one point fresh and different in the industry, and most of us trumpeted that.  We’ll see if this take works.

  143. One of the biggest issues I have with this DC reboot feeling more of the same is the art. Same old tired, standard 90’s looking art. And those Titans costumes. Blech.

  144. @JeffR – Totally. And especially considering DC’s apparent mandate to diversify it’s heroes. They give solo books to Mr Terrific and African Batman, but no Aqualad on Teen Titans? Only way that makes sense is if he’s getting his own book.

  145. This reboot is looking more and more like a 90’s retread which in my mind in horrible.

    90’s with pants

  146. It also seems that these are the 2nd generation of teen sidekicks so the missing titans(raven, Donna Troy and beast boy) are hopefully out there somewhere. I cant believe we have  Dick Grayson & Starfire and none of the others now.

  147. Hope there’s a spacy title perhaps tying together REBELS and Adam Strange, but that’s unlikely right?

  148. Hell yes, 90s style Teen Titans! Life is gonna be real sweet come September!

  149. @JesseCuster

    They haven’t announce JSA…

  150. Why is everyone so Anti 90s? It produced some of the greatest comics of all time. Pull yours heads out of your asses and realize crap like DARK Avengers is going to look even dumber in 10 years.

  151. I actually think Hawk and Dove could be good, especially with Sterling Gates in charge.  Titans actually looks good, and sign me up for both Legion books.

I’m guessing tomorrow will have a few more individual/team books and then Friday will finish off with the Superman family of titles

  152. The new teen titans are doing nothing for me, i get a real 90’s image from the cover. SPeaking of 90’s image Liefeld has changed a bit,he is as piss poor as ever

  153. So excited that I get 2 Legion books. The first Legion Lost was amazing, so here’s hoping! I love the TT redesigns especially Red Robin & Wonder Girl. I hope in the ” new” DC that The Wonder Family is more connected like the Super & Bat Families

  154. @ResurrectionFlan  No. Just… No.

  155. Being a huge Gotham Central fan, I really wish Renee Montoya would get a Question book.

When was the last time she even showed up in a book? Anyone know? And has anyone besides Rucka written her?

  156. @ResurrectionFlan – It has nothing to do with anything against the 90’s. It’s just the fact that it’ll be nearly 2012 when these books come out.

People love other decades of books. Doesn’t mean they want today’s books like like them.

  157. “looking like”, not “like like”.

  158. How does a “Super” person get a tattoo?  Kryptonite ink/needle?  Did he brand himself with heat vison the way that Superman shaves?

  159. @jonnyflash

    Stenciled Sharpie marker?

  160. Love Tim new look

  161. Everything of read of Tim Drake he doesn’t strike me as the type of guy that wants wings on his costume.  thats just me though.

  162. Am I the only one not seeing any Legion rings at all on the two Legion covers?

  163. Legion Lost is the only one that looks good. Why couldn’t they get DnA to write this? Is Resurrection Man taking up all their time? Most of these reek of 90’s “Blah”, though. And, man, does that Teen Titans cover look bad. I know jim lee is Co-Publisher. but, DC needs to STOP letting him redesign costumes. They’re always terrible! Always!!! The man has absolutely no sense of what a good iconic design should be!

  164. So, I know who all of the “Legion Lost” Legionnaires are except the woman with the hairy arm.  Is it Chameleon Girl?

  165. the 1990s called…and they’d like their books back.

Seriously, Rob Liefeld, Fabian Nicieza & Brett Booth?

This really puts a damper on my excitement.

When it comes to getting work I guess it’s not so much talent (Brian Wood, Brian Clevinger), but who you’ve worked with in the past (Bob Harras).

  166. DC Executive 1: Hey Red Robin fans have been asking for a costume redesign from the start. We could use this reboot to give the fans what they want!

DC Executive 2: I love it! This is the kind of forward thinking that is going push sales! So what were you thinking?

DC Executive 1: Well… Who is the coolest comic book character ever?

DC Executive 2: Hmm… Vulture.. from Spider Man?

DC Executive 1: Bingo! We take that costume, remove the fur collar, slap a coat of red on there and Boom! New Red Robin!

DC Executive 2: Sounds good but shouldn’t we keep some element of the old costume for purists?

DC Executive 1: Waaaay ahead of you. What is the BEST part of Tim’s current costume?

DC Executive 2: His…weird SM chest strap things?

DC Executive 1: Exactly! His goofy Thundercat straps! We just keep those things!

DC Executive 2: Sounds great but I dont know…is there anything you can do to make his look more like a Persian club owner?

DC Executive 1: GOLD. Friggin’ random gold. We’ll just kinda bolt them all over the rest of the costume!

DC Executive 2: Great! Call Lee and get him working!

  167. Unless there’s a Young Justice series to be revealed soon, the new Teen Titans title seems like a missed opportunity. Robin, Wonder Girl, Superboy and Kid Flash seem like Exxxtreme versions instead of their YJ portrayals, and no familiar faces from Teen Titans Go! Also, is that Marrow crouching in the image?
This title seems lilke the first big misstep from the new line.
Also, Bryan Q Miller should be writing this!

  168. @Francisco

Wasn’t Nicieza writing the Red Robin series everyone on her liked so much?

  169. If this cover is any indication, I am sooo glad they redesigned Kid Flash. That costume has always been an eyesore to me- one of the worst-looking mainstream hero suits I’d seen. The version on display here looks much more modern. Love it.

I’m liking the Superboy redesign, though I’d like to see the “full view” rather than him with his back turned. And yeah, the taped “S” is a joke by Kid Flash, which I’m glad about. Though I wouldn’t have minded seeing a little cloth patch or something that was clearly sewn onto the existing jacket. Something a little messy, but not so out-there as actual duct tape. lol

If TT is more of a reboot, then I’m a lot more interested in checking it out than I was in jumping onto the book before. Every time I’ve tried them out, the continuity was beyond confusing and they never made any attempts to refresh or explain it in a way that made sense to me. (That’s not to say that the only way to make it work for new readers is to just reboot. Other books I enjoy refresh things all the time without that.)

  170. I think Superboy looks pretty cool, actually (although admittedly dated-waiting-to-happen). But what is with the S-shield being TAPED TO HIS BACK?! That makes NO sense.

  171. I think they’re fucking with us at this point.

  172. Ya know after some thought (And seeing him post something on twitter) I rather would’ve seen Marcus To doing the art for Teen Titans (Heck any book) he’s a fantastic artist and one of the reasons I fell in love with Red Robin. I’m saddened that DC decided not to use him at all during this reboot. =[

  173. @Jupiterman – Unfortunately I don’t think that is an ‘S’ taped to Superboy’s back as a joke.  It really doens’t make sense as most people would have it.  This is the cover to TT #1, they would never set up Connor as the butt of jokes with DC 1st impression for the Team.
If it is ub fact a joke, it’s a dumb one.  Why would you tape the ‘S’ emblem?  It would be like playing a practical joke on a police office by tapping “Police” on their back.

  174. No $ale.

  175. Tim’s new costume reminds me of Dick’s first Nightwing costume. Everyone seems to have wanted to change the costume from the start, but I’ve loved the Red Robin costume since Kingdom Come. Oh well, I’m just happy his’s not dead. Now we just need to find out what happened to Steph and Tim needs his own book again, but I’ll take what I can get.

  176. @drbonkler  You sir, win a free internet right there.

  177. My money is on Tim losing his legs in some horrible accident and becoming the new Oracle.

  178. how do we know that superboy isn’t superman a la flashpoint?!?
ohhhh yeah justice leauge teaser image

  179. WOW! DC has gone back to every thing bad about 90’s comics. Congrats!

  180. Really DC? Liefield? Rob “f**ck-human-anatomy” Liefield? Uuuuuuugh.

I’m just glad he got stuck with the lamest characters ever.

Hopefully he’ll manage to revive that franchise to it’s full glory (sarcasm meter reading: meh)

  181. Red Robin had a kind of detective noirish feel to it. I can’t see Teen Titans replicating that. Looking forward to Batwoman.

  182. The Superboy duct tape symbol is retarded and screams of someone out of touch with youth.

The S tattoo does everything he needs to establish who he is- the extra bit is desperate.

Will Time Drake also be able to communicate with birds now?

  183. The only one I would think about getting is the legion lost book. While i love Pete Woods, I can’t find myself intrested in the legion one bit. Maybe I’ll just look at the pictures.

  184. @ drbonkler HAHAHAHAHA!!!  Take a bow sir!

  185. They released another cover to Titans, it looks worse. The proportions are a mess. Tim is flying, Superboy seems to hanging out from his chest, another character is introduced with big metal fists. And Wondergirl is in front of everyone, but she is drawn to small to get that across.  Also, the Superboy may be a cyborg. A cover to Superboy 1 shows machines putting him together.

Superman titles look to be more of a reboot than say Batman or G.L

  186. Updated with the new Teen Titans cover image which is 100x better than the old one.

  187. So Tim’s costume looks like an unholy mix of the Falcon, Cyclops and Deadpool. I like elements of it but don’t like the entity of it. I’ll pick up the first couple of issues but if they have back-slid the story to where SuperJerseyshore/GothBoy is just coming out of the tank at Cadmus or where ever then I’ll drop it.
Also, can we all chip in and get Leifeld some life drawing and how to draw a realistic human art classes? Why is this hack still getting jobs?

  188. @conor  agreed; I don’t know why, but I’m not as concerned with Tim’s wings as much anymore.

  189. The more I think about it, the more I want to check out that Hawk & Dove comic

  190. Ridiculous, if is the future for Tim they should left him out of this reboot. I’m not that upset because I give this reboot about 12 months before they go back on it.

  191. Sterling Gates went from writing arguably the greatest Supergirl run ever to writing Hawk and Dove with Rob Liefeld on art? How many people actually like each of those thing individually, much less together?!?!
I love Sterling Gates but man…not sure I’ll follow into that territory.

  192. Kid Flash seems to have red hair… I’m really, really not into this reboot if that means what I think it means.

  193. I can’t say i’m hankering to see Liefeld’s constipated drawings again. I like Nicieza writing Legion characters, but I think Fabian would be a better fit on the regular legion title. I tried Levit’s last run…i know he has history with this book…but I just couldn’t get into it. The Legion have always intrigued me, but the title only occasionally hits the momentum I want to see it take. Abnett, Lanning, Peyer, and Waid (the first three collections) are my favorite Legion writers. I could see Grant Morrison’s high octane imagination doing well on a Legion title.

  194. I’ll be buying Teen Titans because I love Tim Drake, and because the powers that be have determined that he is no longer worthy of a solo book (unlike Jason FREAKING Todd and some random guy named Batwing). It disgusts me, quite frankly, but my hands are tied here.

Couldn’t care less about the Legion.

  195. Teen GTitans looks too 90’s Image comics for my taste but I’ll give it a shot because I love Tim Drake. Speaking of 90’s Image what’s Rob Leifeld doing on Hawk and Dove they don’t have ridiculous looking guns and neither are well endowed in the chest area?

  196. Very excited for teen titans, surprisingly.
