Name: edward doherty

My username in real life is actually Edward. I’m a graphic designer who lives in Canberra Australia and in 2009 I will be 27.

I can’t distinctly remember the first two comics I read. The first was a Batman issue about Two-face that I read in the drive between my home town Muswellbrook and Tamworth (Muswellbrook was in The Matrix 2 and the farm scenes from Superman Returns were shot in Tamworth), I can barely remember this issue, I was very young.

I remember my next comic very well. It was Action Comics #405; part of the Reign of the Supermen story and had the Cyborg Superman holding a burnt american flag. As a kid this blew my mind… What the Fuck happened to Superman? Why is he burning the flag? I was hooked.

In my first year of school I was banned from talking about the 1989 Batman movie because the teacher’s at my Catholic school thought perhaps I had some kind of Batman related Asperger syndrome and men in tights are a little gay. So when Batman: Knightfall came out again I couldn’t believe this shit. Bruce Wayne had is spine broken? Who is Jean-Paul Valley and who is this Bane character?

A few years later in year 11 I was on a inter-school cross-country running trip, we had to drive to a city near Muswellbrook called Newcastle. Newcastle had the only comic store I knew of at the time called the Phantom Zone (10 years on I still consider the shop owner, James, a friend)… so during the wait to run, I ducked out and ran to the store. This was when I first brought The Dark Knight Returns. I got back to the track with some time to kill so I started to read the trade back. I got so into it, I missed the start of my race…. I eventually came 27th.

Now I think my tastes have changed. I really like Grant Morrison’s creator owned work; The Invisibles is one of my favourite titles. We3, Seaguy, Sebastian-O, Vimanarama and The Filth were cool too. I think Morrison’s stuff works best when he writes about English culture. I Like Powers by Bendis’ and his Daredevil run, despite what is said about his current work, he is one o f the best things to happen to superhero comics in a long time. Brain K. Vaughn is fantastic, any girl unlucky enough to go out with me WILL read Y: The Last Man at one point. Warren Ellis and Mark Millar’s run on The Authority… great.

I would like attractive comic related t-shirts. I mean, the echo shirt is cool and all but i don't think it looks particularly good. So yeah, some sweet designs on a comic shirt

ha ha. Conor knipped that in the bud. RE: Grant Morrison. One of my all time favourite writers. I kind of put him up there with Alan Moore when it comes to the enjoyable re-read of comic series. However, as i get older, i can definately see an increasely large difference. Just last night, i was reading the Invisibles: Counting to None Trade. There was some fond memories in there. ...
