Every month i feel underwhelmed by the presence of The Unwritten on my pull list and every month i am presently surprised by how interesting and exciting the title is.

Having no exposure to Harry Potter, in writing or film, the initial presimance of the title seemed a little trite and cynically commerical but having read the series until now i see that there is much more to the Unwritten than a single note. The Harry Potter connection now just seems to be a device to explore literature. Tom Taylor has developed into a strange character; part explorer and part personification of stroy and it’s relationship to the real world while maintaining a level of disbelief and humanity.

While the heady ideas of literature and it’s relationship to the real world are at the forefront of the comic, it’s easy to forget that an actaul involved plot is developing. Tom has been framed for murder and gets in deeper while weird forces conspire against him.

While the story becomes more involved so does Peter Gross’ art.His pages contain a lot of panels to match the title’s ideas. His friendly and warm style is conteracted by the darker story elements.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 3 - Good
