After being wowed by Action Comics earlier this month, I picked up the first issue of Superman hoping to get the same feeling. Unfortunately that wasn’t the case. Superman #1 has its moments, and some interesting ideas, but overall something felt very vanilla about the whole thing. While AC had a lot of energy, this Superman was more in line with the older DC titles that soured me on the character in the first place. Perez not knowing when to quiet down and let the art do the talking didn’t help either; there’s too much text and then there’s TOO MUCH TEXT and this was definitely the latter. I’m pretty sure whining about too much writing is why bookworms hate comic book readers, but I digress. Art-wise I dug it and unlike some I have no qualms with the new costume. Storywise, the takeover of the Daily Planet was interesting but the dialogue was very on the nose about how evil digital journalism is and its shots at Rupert Murdoch were not exactly subtle. Again I didn’t hate this, but it’s too plain to continue reading especially while I’m on a budget.

  1. Thank you. “Plain” was the word I was looking for but couldn’t seem to find. I, too, was just underwhelmed by this whole endeavor. I like a wordy comic, but this was a chore to plow through.
