Detective #854 seemed destined to take its place amid the pile "it was alright, I just want to know what's going on in Gotham" pile.  That opinion was quickly rethought as soon as I read the first page.

In Batgirl - Year One, Dick was very into checking out the new girl bat, and helping her out.  His advice about her hair seemed fitting with the older Dick (not followed up with a come on, as he would have in his Robin days).  It was even better to see that she had already devised a solution, for her hair was longer when she donned the outfit in 52.

While the art work for her day to day life is kind of...well...it's nothing to look forward to, the art when she puts on the Batwoman suit is incredible.  The three 2-page spreads after she races out of her treehouse? are worthy of being framed into a tritych.  The coloring is great, too.  I know the shadowy versus the bright is a bit cliche, but Alice's glow next to the somber Batwoman is beautiful to look at.

The artwork also moves with the story.  It makes time pass ala montage to deliver us to where we want the story to go.

All in all a great issue.  And, you get a bonus Question story.  If they plan on just rotating the two characters as the lead in Detective, then sign me up.

Just as an aside, the treehouse.  This isn't the mansion from 52.  So, where is this place?  I'm guessing Florida from the light streaming in the windows.  Perhaps the tree, is a payoff from Poison Ivy.  Maybe I should have picked up Gotham Sirens to find out.  Issue 2 needs to show us the exterior of this place.  Aside from what Alice is up to, this is the other big mystery of the issue.
