You ever read Promethea? Alan Moore’s and J.H Williams fantastic comic that is quiet possibly the most metaphysical thing ever put to newsprint. This was also my first introduction to Williams’ amazing artwork. His page layouts in Promethea need to be seen to be believed. It blew me away.

He is continuing to champion the art of comics with his work here on Batwoman – and unlike Promethea – get exposure to a wider audience. I find it so unreal that for 2.99 anyone can walk into a comic shop and buy a masterpiece of modern art. The only that Batwoman is lacking that Promethea had is a worthy story to go along with those stunning drawings.

Not that what Williams and Blackman are writing here is bad, it’s not. In fact I think its some of the most honest and realistic writing of most of the New 52 to date. Kate Kane is portrayed not as an untouchable superhero that talks and thinks only of the next bad guy to punch, but as a woman with an open heart and closed lips. As a woman that has love to give but unsure if she should risk it considering her night-time activities. No, the story and dialog is good and the pacing is flawless, it’s just I wish I was reading Alan Moore’s words.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent

  1. You’re so right about the modern art. People complain about the price of comics, and I get it – but work like this – every page should be in a frame.
