The Good, The Bad, and The Fishy

THE GOOD:
Ivan Reis could drawn a Justin Bieber comic and I would buy it. The dude is that good. No page in Aquaman #1 is boring or uninspired. His panels flow seamlessly into each other and it’s never a guessing game. Fantastic!

Geoff Johns has created an cool enemy in The Trench and I’m looking forward to seeing what havoc they wreak. John’s also has gift for everyday language and the dialog in this issue is spot on. You can tell Geoff has his finger on the pulse of the American culture.

THE BAD
I wish this comic took longer to read. I finished it in about 2 and 1/2 minutes. It just doesn’t seem like I got my moneys worth of story here. Art’s worth? Oh sure, 2.99 for a Ivan Reis comic is fine with me, but I wanted more to read. It’s one of my biggest problems with Johns work these days – he relies too much on the visuals to tell the story.

THE FISHY
I’m not sure I really like the diner scene all too much. I mean, I guess its kinda fun but it also seems like a pathetic way to “break the 4th wall”. Know what I mean? It’s like Johns wanted us to get that those people in the diner were all US (in fact one of the patrons there looks like Harry Knowels from Aint It Cool), and we all gather around Aquaman to let him know that he kinda sucks in our book. I don’t need to read this in a comic. There is just way too much Aquaman bashing in this comic. It’s like Johns equated us has being bullies and now we should feel guilty for making fun of Aquaman all these years.

Just make him cool and shit Johns – enough with the jokes about cups of water and fish and chips.
