Aquaman eats fish n’ chips? You bet he does. (What the heck else is there in Atlantis to eat?) He’s able to leap tall buildings in a single bound or two? Hells yeah. Bulletproof? Damn straight.

This is the first Aquaman book I’ve ever read. And I am very glad that I did. Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis have created a book that is full of awesome. Criminals and policemen both scratching their heads in confusion over Aquaman’s sudden appearance in the middle of Boston to bust up some baddies. Fantastic.

The shock and awe on customers faces in a restaurant when the King of Atlantis walks in, trident in tow, sits down and orders fish n’ chips. Genius.

I’ve been following Geoff Johns’ run on Green Lantern and Flash for years. I love his writing, like a ton of people do. But this felt…different. Like he was having more fun writing this. Maybe because this is a character that is relatively new to him, outside of what he did in Brightest Day. Or maybe because this is the New 52 and he just can. Whatever the case, the scene in the restaurant where a blogger interviews Aquaman and brings up events that have happened, not in the DCU, but in our real life world about him being seen as a joke and being “no ones’ favorite super hero” is one of the greatest scenes I’ve ever scene in a comic book.

Then there’s Ivan Reis. Oh. My. Poseidon. This guy’s work continues to amaze me. Like Johns, I’ve been following his work for a while now (obviously, since the two have worked together for a while now) and it just keeps getting better and better. The creepy fish guys coming out of the ocean at the beginning and Aquaman’s first appearance in the aforementioned scene in Boston, being just two examples of his great work in this book.

Aquaman a joke? Maybe last week. But this week, this week he’s on solid ground and in excellent hands.
