Christ I've been going back and forth with this series a lot haven't I? Ever since the new status quo kicked in I have been going in and out of this like a whore. But can you really blame me? This series can be so inconsistent sometimes its just mind boggling. Although others on this website could tell you differently; I'd like to think I'm being truthful with you. No this series hasn't been the worst ever since OMD ended; but it can be in the hands of lazy writing as of late.
To get to the point I thought that, once again, I try this series out. So why not get this going by reading the 600th extravaganza? Let me tell you this is a big comic and right away you can definitely tell this could be special. Not only do you get one extra long main story but you get a handful of other extras that certainly fits for the $4.99 price tag. Hell this is actually a bit of a bargin for only five bucks. So right away the special issue has some brownie points for the first impressions. But is this really any good?
Short answer: Yes
Long answer: Yes, but there are some low points to this anniversary.
If we're grading this issue just on the main story then I can't say I would recommend it. It has Dr. Octopus finally getting back out of the shadows and doing what he does best: evil science. It started off well enough cause finally we get a classic Spidey villain into the mix that isn't named 'Norman Osborn'. In terms of his actual plan I have to say for a 'genius' this certainly isn't one of his most memorible ideas. Even when Spider-Man calls out on this ridiculous idea, Octopus can't even say something strong to back it up. It's like a really cheesy villain from an 80's cartoon. Then you got the real plot of the issue which is Aunt May's wedding. I knew that she was going to marry JJJ Sr. before going into this but I have to say: Really Marvel? You had to make Peter make a ridiculous choice over the two women she loved and force May to marry this guy? It just feels so silly that we had a whole *cough*notaretcon*cough* just to get her into this predictament.
One thing I can say to make this main story a must read is two names. John Romita Jr. and Klaus 'motherfucker' Jansan! I've read the two major events for Spider-man where Romita Jr. was artist and let me tell you I was not pleased. That was not the Jr. I grew to love with his early days of Spider-Man. That was a pretender and so was the man claiming to be Klaus Jansan. Here it's just pure artistic gold and people sorta nervous about the art team can now be reassured how great they are. If there is one artist that should stay on Spider-Man til the end of days it's these two guys. Action scenes are awesome to look at and it really flows well, like it's a cartoon. His anatomy for the characters are also good here and not incredibly inconsistent like the previous major arcs. On the whole the main story gets points for art more so then the story.
"What's that?, says a Marvel executive, "you love it that Amazing Spider-Man has moved on and is telling new stories?"
'"Like fuck you do!" The executive says this as he hits you over the head with a sack. "Your gonna get reminded of One More Day and the ramifications every single issue and you better get in line to enjoy it!"
That imaginary conversation gives me my entire frustration for this new status quo for Spider-Man. Writers would probably like to get away from that storyline more then anything, but when I read an issue it seems like there has to be a reference to it every time. Whether it be a blatant reference or a sly in joke for the readers; it just has to be mentioned. Why does Marvel take one step forward with this new take and then five steps backwards? Why can't they tell interesting stories with this new status quo? Plus why is there a new status quo? I've been reading, probably, a good year's worth of Spider-Man and so far there is no reason for this new take. It just drives me like......
Sorry I'm going on a hateful rant there. There's more to this comic then just medicore storytelling and fantastic art for current Spidey. You also get a ton of back up features and they might be the best I've seen for a comic since Thor #600. Possibly the best of the entire bunch is shockingly a story by Stan Lee. If you could name me one thing that man has done well currently for the past ten years you couldn't name me one. But Stan Lee really took the time and effort to tell a great short story. Maybe it's just me thinking too hard on the matter but it really seems to be about 'his' take on Spider-Man. The psychiatrist looks a lot like Lee so my idea of it being a story about him seems to be more true. From the four armed Spider-Man to his current status quo, Lee comments on all of them and I for one loved every minute of it. Then you add in Marcos Martin art and it's like your in a Silver Age comic heaven. Other highlights of the back up features is a Briteweiser Aunt May story with gorgeous art; a Zeb Wells story with a funny comic book guy like tourist; and finally a story on Madam Web. Which I thought the latter was a cartoon only character; but I guess Marvel pulled a 'Harley Quinn' on me without noticing.
So what do we have here? We have a pretty good anniversary issue with some amazing co-features. If I would rate this comic just for the co-features then I guess I would say:
"I whole heartily recommend Amazing Spider-Man #600"-TheNextChampion
But if I would go with the main story then I say avoid this at all costs. If you have been hating on this new Spideyverse since a year and a half ago (jeez, that long ago?) then your not going to love it. It certainly isn't bad to read but it's just as frustrating as ever to learn you could tell this entire story with Parker and Mary Jane still together.
Main Story with art a 2/5 and a 5/5. The back ups a fully 5/5 for me.
Art: 4 - Very Good
