Picking up (and even thinking about) Amazing Spider-Man #600 had evoked some pretty strong ideas for me. “What crazy plot-twist are they going to try and throw at me this time?” “Is at least going to be well executed?” “Is this going to just be a watered down version of Spider-Man to bring in new fans?” “Well, at least John Romita Jr. is penciling it.”

So of course I was pleasantly surprised when I realized they did all of these things without giving me watered down collector’s issue shlock. ASM #600 succeeds by being one thing first and foremost: a really good Spider-Man issue. The main story contains all of the classic elements of a great Spider-Man story. A classic Spider-Man villian, Peter Parker still figuring out how to juggle all of his responsibilities as himself and as Spider-man, and a solid big moment ending. Not only that, but the execution is flawless. Dan Slott obviously has a lot of love for the wall-crawler.

Oh… and JRJR penciled it. The Romita gene for penciling ASM appears to be alive and well. No offense to Mark Millar, but I think JRJR is wasting his time with Kick-Ass. Something really special happens when he works with Spidey as his medium, and I love every panel of it.

ASM #600 will pull in new fans not just because it’s a 100s issue, not just because of the return of Mary Jane, but because this is the best single-issue example of what is great about an Amazing Spider-Man comic. All of that makes this the perfect issue Spidey fans can talk their friends in to picking up and giving Spider-Man a chance. Because if they don’t get it after reading this issue, they probably never will.
