If I read the word "tropes" one more time on this website my head's gonna go all Michael Ironside in SCANNERS.
We should start a drinking game to the podcast - every time one of the guys says "tropes" or "conceit", take a drink.
I am SO on board with this. I was a little wary after the 2nd issue, but this issue really picked it up. In three issues I've come to care more for a character like the Melter then I do any X-character. Cornell is flying under the radar and I don't understand why. Honestly? I think he's going to be one of the great comic writers in the next few years.
And I hear what you're saying with Brooks, but I actually think he's tamed his pencils over the last year. Far less cartoony (not that there's anything wrong with cartoony, it's just not dark reign-y, yknow?) then his work on the USM annuals and his arcs on Ultimate FF. It's sad; there's no buzz for this book, and I think it deserves some. It's lost in the shuffle of all this Dark Reign hoojibawhatsis.
I can just hear the crickets from Josh's side of the room as Ron giggles and guffaws and "Ok, so, anyway"s his way through his manic justification for this pick. You are not alone, Josh. Oh, no. You are not alone.
Nice review. I couldn't even get past the first issue of this mess, even with McGuiness (spell? ;-) ) doing the art. When ever I ask Hulk fans about this, they either throw shake their heads in disgust or try to explain the plot to me, which, after about 5 minutes of gobbledeegook, they give up. Hope that they take Jen Walters in a good direction. Other than the John Byrne run, I've never read much that added to her character. I agree with you on getting a young hungry writer to give it a go as well, but Marvel has flipped the bird to any-and-all young hungry writers.
Is Jane dressed like The Punisher or is he by the side of the dune buggy screaming like a maniac because he just shot his son through the head to avoid being eaten by MIST-beasts? And is it the Spider-Mobile? If it's the Spider-Mobile, I'm in.
And Robby, I wish I had some advise for you re: trying something new, but it's all so damn relative, y'know? Not a big week for new comics.
