The Best of the Week in Panels – 09.12.2012

We have currently a built-in allergy to unpleasant or disturbing information. Our mass media reflect this. But unless we get up off our fat surpluses and recognize that panels in the main are being used to distract, delude, amuse, and insulate us, then panels and those who finance them, those who look at them, and those who work at them, may see a totally different picture too late.

The primary benefit of guaranteed secured loans is that you won’t lose any assets, meaning home or car, if you can’t make payments. Additionally, unsecured loans are effortless to dismiss in bankruptcy court.

Batman #0

By James Tynion IV, Andy Clarke, FCO Plascencia, & Patrick Brosseau

In a back-up story that featured all of Batman’s future sidekicks being inspired by the brand new Batsignal, I found this quiet moment with Barbara Gordon on the roof of GCPD the most affecting.

Uncanny X-Force #31

By Rick Remender, Phil Noto, Frank Martin Jr. or Dean White, & Cory Petit

Oh no!

The Shade #12

By James Robinson, Gene Ha, Art Lyon, & Todd Klein

The aftermath of J. Richard Swift’s transformation into The Shade was just a bit somber.

The Rocketeer: Cargo of Doom #2

By Mark Waid, Chris Samnee, Jordie Bellaire, & Shawn Lee

The best two page sequence in comics in… forever.

Fantastic Four #610

By Jonathan Hickman, Ryan Stegman, Paul Mounts, & Clayton Cowles

The sea of flat AIM heads made me laugh and laugh and laugh. I don’t know why. But it did.

Punk Rock Jesus #3

By Sean Murphy

You know, on the surface this is an incredibly simple panel. It’s just a guy with a gun being pointed at his face. But the intense look and the scratchy, almost angry detailing on his face stopped me cold as I made my way down the page.

Winter Soldier #10

By Ed Brubaker, Butch Guice, Bettie Breitweiser, Joe Caramagna, & Steve Epting

At first I was sad that Michael Lark wasn’t on art duties this month but then I remembered that Butch Guice is doing the best work of his career with Winter Soldier. Steranko would be proud.

Frankenstein, Agent of S.H.A.D.E. #0

By Matt Kindt, Alberto Ponticelli, Wayne Faucher, Jose Villarrubia, & Patrick Brosseau

I love the exaggerated arm and the sharp angle that draws the eye from the foreground all the way in to the bloody head wound.

Avengers vs. X-Men #11

By Brian Michael Bendis, Olivier Coipel, Mark Morales, Laura Martin, & Chris Eliopoulos

Scott’s been watching a lot of commercials for a possibly shady online university.

Batman and Robin #0

By Peter J. Tomasi, Patrick Gleason, Mick Gray, John Kalisz, & Carlos M. Mangual

Awwwww.

Comments

  1. Uncanny X-Force you don’t know who he is talking to. So many people with healing factors in this book. Great picks Conor.

  2. Avatar photo Jacen Chris (@jcbhatestweeter) says:

Punk Rock Jesus is probably my favorite book right now. It’s awesome seeing SGM doing what he wants and putting passion into it.

Is it weird that I enjoyed Batman & Robin more than Batman this week?

  3. I hadn’t seen those Rocketeer panels yet. Holy crap. That book looks like its so much up my alley it’s not even funny.

  4. Yeah, love Damian in the Bat suit.

  5. Ponticelli has always done “good” work on Frankenstein. However, on the Zero Issue he leaped about 2 pay grades. His composition choices were awesome. Re: the above. In fact, there are two GREAT panels in the beginning of that issue. One depicting Victor F’s lab (great detail) and the other page features a unique rendering of Vitctor. Good stuff.

  6. Damian looks like an owl in that cowl. Gleason did a lot of fantastic things with Damian’s eyes in this issue, especially with reflections, making Damian look alien.

  7. “Imagine them with rockets!” should be a new meme.

  8. I really liked that Barbara Gordon moment, too. Beautiful page.

  9. That Punk Rock Jesus panel… Wow! So gritty and “3D”, it just pops out of the page.

    Why haven’t I been reading this? 0_o

  10. I really really loved that Shade panel. One of the best series of 2012.

  11. I love that image of Damian in the cowl. Gleeson is easily one of the best artists currently at DC in my opinion. I did a double take when i first saw that image because i thought Damian had got so excited that he had pee’d on the floor a little bit. It took me about 10 seconds to remember he’s standing on a huge globe.

  12. Avenging Spidey and New Avengers had a lot of great panels this week. NA mostly for the witty banter between Luke and DD.

  13. Punk Rock Jesus – I think the gunman’s packing a 2019 Detective Special.

  14. Young Damian wearing the cowl was the easiest pick for me for a ‘Panel of the Week’.

  15. Starman is my favorite comic book…….and I want that Shade series so badly to come out in trade. I was very, VERY late to the party with that book. Now I don’t know where to get the back issues…….dang……..

But I’m loving Franenstein: Agent of S.H.A.D.E.! Love that panel!

  16. My vote is for AvX 11

  17. Wow, what a great week for panels. I love them all, especially the Winter Soldier panel and the Frankenstein panel, two books that I have been REALLY enjoying.
