Bonus Question: What is the best cake?

Comments

  1. Of this week’s books, I am most excited for Morning Glories #2!  That was a hell of a strong first issue.

And carrot cake…no raisins…rich cream cheese frosting.

  2. Just a "catch up" week for me.

BQ: There’s nothing quite like the wedding cake of a couple you only know through a friend. Trust me.

  3. 27 books this week. I need to go lay down.

BQ: yellow cake with vanilla whipped cream frosting, chilled.

  4. BQ: Ice Cream cake. You cannot go wrong. It is also (cream cheese and buttermilk notwithstanding) the only cake with an acceptable frosting.

  5. BQ: The cake is a lie.

  6. Chocolate fudge cake with either chocolate or vanilla buttercream frosting. You other people are liars and charlatans, and you should be burned at the cake-stake.

  7. My wife made a Guinness Chocolate Cake for my birthday this year. It was beyond incredible! A stout and chocolate go really well together.

    Chocolate Guinness Cake
    Ingredients:
    For the cake:
    1 cup Guinness beer
    10 tbsp. unsalted butter
    1/2 cup cocoa powder
    2 cups superfine sugar
    3/4 cup sour cream
    2 eggs
    1 tbsp. vanilla extract
    2 cups all-purpose flour
    2 1/2 tsp. baking soda

    For the frosting:
8 oz. cream cheese (no need to soften)
    5 tbsp. butter, softened
    2 tsp. vanilla extract
    2 1/2 cups powdered sugar

    Directions:
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.  Grease and flour the sides of a 9-inch round springform pan, and line the bottom with parchment paper.  In a small saucepan, combine the Guinness and butter.  Heat over medium heat until the butter is melted.  Remove from the heat.  Whisk in the cocoa powder and sugar.

In the bowl of an electric mixer, combine the sour cream, eggs and vanilla.  Beat on medium speed until well combined.  Add the Guinness mixture to the bowl and mix until incorporated.  In a small bowl, sift together the flour and baking soda.  Add the dry ingredients to the bowl of the mixer and mix on low speed until just incorporated.

Pour the batter into the prepared pan.  Bake for 45-55 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes back clean.  Cool completely in the pan on a wire rack.  Once cooled, remove the sides of the pan.

To make the frosting, combine the cream cheese, butter, and vanilla in the bowl of a stand mixer.  Cream on medium-high speed.  Add the powdered sugar to the bowl in batches, beating on low until just combined and then on high speed until desired consistency is reached.  For a stiffer icing, add more powdered sugar.  Frost cooled cake as desired.

  8. BQ:  Cheesecake, and it ain’t close.

  9. Amazing Spider-Man and Unwritten. I might try to grab the first issue of Morning Glories if it’s still on the shelf.

BQ: Dairy Queen ice cream cake.

  10. This may be surprising, especially when considering the fact that I’ve not bought a Muppets comic before, but I’m ridiculously excited for MUPPET SHERLOCK HOLMES. I do love me some Holmes, especially when it’s funny and adorable.

BQ: The best cake? Which ever one I’m currently eating.

  11. 13 books for me this week. Looking forward to Morning Glories 2, unwritten, and Steve Rogers. Birds of prey, zatanna and gl:emerald warriors get one more week to impress.

  12. Brightest Day 10, Green Lantern Emerald Warrior 2, ASM 643, Astonishing Spider-Man and Wolverine 3, Birds of Prey 5.

BQ: Devils Food Cake and Chocolate frosting.  Yum!

Though, I now have to try Chocolate Guinness Cake.  Thanks, RolandofGilead.

  13. just brightest day 10

i hate how uneven weeks are for the big two. some weeks are tons of big titles and other weeks barely anything. even it out a little please.

  14. Kind of a light week for me so I’m giving a chance to some of the tie-ins/books I’m about to drop.

    BQ: Devil’s Food.

  15. Most looking forward to Unwritten this week. I’m just kind of blah on the story, but the "Choose Your Own Adventure" aspect has me intrigued.

Also looking forward to Brightest Day, Wee Hughie, Astonishing Spider-Man/Wolverine, DC Legacies, Hack/Slash, Scott Kolins on the JSA special, and Morning Glories. Some pretty good stuff, but I really feel there should be a Kirkman or Bendis book here somewhere.

BQ: Vanilla cake with white icing. Best is the hard, sugary icing that flakes or crumbles when you take a bite. You really can’t find it anymore, but if you have to settle for "regular" icing, throw a couple white chocolate chips on the top. Tasty.

  16. Ice cream cake is the best cake. Anyone who says different is a liar.

  17. Amazing Spider-Man, Birds of Prey, Brightest Day, Emerald Warriors, X-Factor, and the new OZ HC!!

BQ:  The only answer is confetti cake.

  18. Astonishing Spider-Man Wolverine #3 (OF 5)
    Batman Beyond #4 (OF 6)
    Berserk Tp Vol 34
    Birds Of Prey #5

    Brightest Day #10

    Deadpool #27
    Green Lantern Emerald Warriors #2

    Pale Horse #4 (OF 4)
Thor For Asgard #2 (OF 6)
    Time Bomb #2 (OF 3)
    X-23 (New) #1

I’m really looking forward to reading Timebomb and The new Thor mini, the last issues were really good.

BQ: Forget about cake, now pie that’s where it’s at!

  19. Since I like both the big two plus several of the indies …

Marbled chocolate and vanilla with raspberry tort …

  20. Lookin forward to DC Legacies and Brightest Day.

BQ: Devil’s food with vanilla frosting. Love it.

  21. Astonishing Spider-Man Wolverine #3 (OF 5)

    Batman Beyond #4 (OF 6)

    Brightest Day #10

Captain America Patriot #1 (OF 4)

    Heroic Age Super Heroes #1

    Morning Glories #2

    Steve Rogers Super-Soldier #3 (OF 4)

Surprised at how excited I am for the Handbook-style entry this week. Early POW contenders include Steve Rogers: Super Soldier, Morning Glories and Astonishing Spidey/Wolvie.

In-store flip-throughs include GL: Emerald Warriors, New Mutants and Deadpool. They may be purchaced, but current odds are not excellent.

BQ redux: Damn, I forgot about cheesecake. And Boston Cream cake. Man, gluttony is the awesomest of all the sins!

  22. Gagh, big book week!

Brightest Day, Emerald Warriors, Hack/Slash My First Maniac, Morning Glories, Northlanders, Unwritten and Zatanna.

BQ: Hmmm…I concur with JesTr. I usually don’t eat cake but pie rocks!

  23. Black Forest.

  24. Yellow cake with chocolate icing cannot be beat. Even better if it’s still warm. Throw in a cold glass milk and you have what would be the dessert portion of my last meal if I’m ever put to death

  25. I am looking forward to this week’s books, which I haven’t been able to say lately. DMZ, Northlanders, Hellblazer, & X-Factor.

Bonus: The best cake is pie.

  26. Bonus: The correct answer is…

Red Velvet Cake from ‘Joan’s on Third’ in Los Angeles!!!

  27. Fairly big week for me: ASM, GI Joe Cobra, Hellblazer(if my shop gets it in), Morning glories 1 and 2, Northlanders, and The Unwritten.

    BQ: Cake? Give me Pie!!!

  28. So does anyone know if Star Wars: Dark Empire is any good? Because I’m kicking around buying it. I remember seeing preview pages that thrilled 12-year-old-Ottobott in some commemorative magazine celebrating Star Wars, but have no idea if they actually hold up to time or not.

Either way, Mystery Society #3 is coming out! Hot dog! I wish it was successful enough to where I could just trade wait it, though.

BQ: Black Forest Cake. Give me milk and I am satisfied.

  29. I prefer pie but if I must eat cake then make it a German Chocolate Cake.

  30. Yet another slow week. The constant delays and wrong solicitation dates keep making it so.

Deadpool, Joe the Barbarian (finally!!), and Thunderbolts. Although the latter might not be a buy….Not sure I want to read another crossover for Thunderbolts considering how the Academy one went.

BQ: Damn, someone took my Portal joke!

  31. BQ: Vanilla and Chocolate Ice Cream Cake with choclate crunchies in the middle… or Duncan Hines Devil’s Food Cupcakes with NO frosting and a glass of milk… or my French Vanilla Cupcakes with Bailey’s & Cocoa Frosting… or Red Velvet Cake with Cream Cheese Icing…

  32. 14 book week, of which I’m most looking forward to Astonishing Spidey/Wolvie, Unwritten, Time Bomb, Amazing Spidey, Morning Glories (lots of picks from the iFanbase!) and Joe The Barbarian. Good times…

BQ: Cheese, probably.  But I like coffee and walnut, any variation of chocolate and also a butter pecan cake I make from time to time. Really, life’s too short to narrow it down to just one.

  33. dv8 Gods And Monsters #6 (OF 8)
    Gi Joe Cobra Ii #8
Joe The Barbarian #7 (OF 8)
    Steve Rogers Super-Soldier #3 (OF 4)
    Thunderbolts #148
    Zatanna #5

    BQ: Princess cakes!!! Of course!

  34. BQ: Cherry Pie.

  35. Yummy!

    Princess cake

  36. BQ: Ice Cream Cake. Twice the awesome. Also, please remove this pie-loving rif-raff. They are an embarrasment to this website.

  37. Joe The Barbarian, Astonishing Spider Man and Wolverine.

Also pulling Morning Glories #2, even though I have yet to read the first issue lol.

  38. Brightest Day. I’m hoping that issue #10 will be a nice mini-milestone story.

Every kind of cake is the best kind of cake. I celebrate equality and tolerance of all things sweet when negotiating the desert counter. =)

  39. @ RolandoGilead: nice!

  40. Oh, and comics! This week ROCKS! Morning Glories, Hack/Slash, and a double dose of Wood w/ DV8 and   mutha-effin’ Northlanders and DV8. No slackers this week.

  41. i have to agree with the cheese cake. That’s pretty good.

  42. Only Brightest Day #10 for me, although that’s not a bad thing, I’m going up to London to go on a back issue hunt this weekend, so any spare money I can get helps!

  43. louisiana crunch cake

  44. Unwritten, Morning Glories, and Time Bomb for me.

  45. Really not intrested in anything that’s coming out this week. I’m actually going to pick up some stuff from last week. Probably batgirl #14 from last week.

BQ: It’s a battle between strawberry shortcake and carrot cake with creamcheese frosting. Both have to be cold and with a glass of cold milk.

  46. Just ASM and GL: Emerald Warriors for me, another beat fucking week!!  Where the hell is Return Of Bruce Wayne?!

  47. Very glad to have a light week.  My hold stack at my LCS has gotten steadily non-depreciable from week to week, so I look forward to be able to put a sizable dent in it this week.

3 books:  Bulletproof Coffin, DCU Legacies, Mystery Society

  48. Light week. Will probably go pick up a graphic novel then.

    BQ: Velvet cheesecake.

  49. 3 books this week: Amazing Spider-Man, X-Factor and Phoenix Without Ashes.

BQ: I’m a sucker for yellow cake with milk chocolate frosting

  50. Cheesecake baked with small peach chunks. Everyone else is battling for second place.

  51. What a lame week. Jeez

  52. So much for saving money because of a light week.  I almost just broke the bank over at the TopShelf sale!

  53. Empowered, which is always the comics highlight of my year.

bonus: pumpkin. Everything is better with pumpkin.

  54. bonus: Carrot or Coffee Cake most definetly. all other cakes lack the after taste to crave for more.

  55. First read this week will be the Brightest Day books then DCU Legacies #5. The former because BD is moving like a locomotive and GL: EW still has me wondering just what the secret mission is. The latter ’cause I can’t get enough of Perez.

As far as cake goes; since I was a child it’s been strawberry shortcake with fresh cream frosting. As an adult, I found a bakery in NY on 3rd Ave., upper thirties on the West side of the street that makes the best carrot cake. @bansidhewail would love it!

P.S. While I’m waiting for a real "History of the DCU," anyone reading the DC Timeline in the last pages of the DC Comics Super Hero Collection magazine? I find the article comprehensive concise and engaging.

  56. Coffee Cake

  57. thx you rolandofgilead for that cake recipe . but my girl suggest i put my nuts in it so we’ll see if nuts make a difference . but what i’m thinking is what goes better with beer then big salty nuts . pulse i just shaved . nice sexy time .

  58. deadpooh, all the brightest day stuff ,batman beyond, thor for asgard ,star wars dark empire.
