December 13, 2011 9:37 pm One of your listeners asked if you could recommend a novel from a comic book writer? Peter David wrote, "The Incredible Hulk: What Savage Beast" that ties into the Marvel continuity which happens to be an excellent read.
October 12, 2011 3:48 pm I liked this Batgirl story. It wasn't a huge leap accepting her walking again but at least she didn't DIE and brought back. I thought the story was well paced and I liked the cliff hanger.
October 12, 2011 3:09 pm This has the feel of Weapon X without it being good. I read it but I came out thinking I just don't care for this character. His inner dialog didn't seem authentic and I found myself coming in and out of the story.
October 12, 2011 2:59 pm Really? The book of the week? I'll give you the art is very good 4/5. However the story? I had to re-read it again and I can't see what everyone else is seeing. The characters are very dry, stoic. After reading it, I still can't remember any characters other than Maxwell Lord. I agree with TomSwift the organizations do seem cliche and where do they fit in the DC Universe? I still don't know what this book is about?
October 11, 2011 4:14 pm Of the few of the 52, this is one I really enjoy enough to stick with. Story is intriguing and the art is well suited for the feel it's striving for. I can't say enough! Five thumbs up!
October 11, 2011 4:02 pm Ok, I'm liking this book enough to continue with Morrison's direction. I loved how Superman burst out laughing during Luthor's interrogation. You could feel that pause as Superman was making that connection. I would have LOVED to see Superman screw with Luthor by speaking in goat afterwards and have that as an ongoing gag to piss Luthor off in future issues. This does feel like a realistic beginning and we're seeing it happen as opposed to flashbacks. His ship looked very 1940's or even a carnival ride you engage by inserting quarters. Luthor's dialog doesn't come across as an intellectual, "Dissecting this creature will teach us how to build WARRIOR GODS, (who talks like that?) as opposed to "Reverse engineering this alien life form will advance the species." You would also think since Luthor is such an egotist he would have plans to advance himself as opposed to anyone else that might be potentially superior to himself. I don't get the genius vibe from Luthor or at least someone smarter or crafty enough to outwit Superman.
October 11, 2011 3:30 pm I didn't care for this book either way. Why does Frankenstein exist in this universe? Yes I liked the art but I was not wooed in any way to like the characters, the story, etc. I could go on but why?
October 11, 2011 3:28 pm Awful, Awful. If you're going to break someone out of a heavily guarded stronghold, wouldn't you do it when your holders are least expecting it or when you're not so heavily guarded? What was the element of surprise, revealing yourself while you have everyone on guard, aiming right at you, really? Wouldn't you think you would have Starfire disguised as one of the guards and start blowing things up as your distraction/element of surprise? I don't know much of the red hood but it's RED HOOD, not RED BAT or BAT RED or RED WING. Why does he have a bat on his chest? Yes I know the association with Batman but isn't Jason Todd independent of Batman? Are we supposed to get Jason Todd is reckless or just stupid? Moving on to Starfire. Uh, honestly, do woman really dress that way? How effective is stripper apparel when you're a potential target? Is she invincible, have some kind of protective field? Why aren't we seeing Red Hood or Speedy with G-Strings spouting an erection with a BOING sound effect while you're at it? Oh, the rationale is she's an alien, right? These character's are exactly that, I am so far removed I can't see them as people but as jokes. The only one I really liked was Essence but it's not enough for me to move on to the next book. BOMB.
October 11, 2011 2:43 pm This issue definitely takes off from the previous one. I think it's odd you have Superman, Batman, Aquaman in the first issue but no mention in the second? Yes I see their appearance to demonstrate their being in the same universe. Did the events that prompted a visit from Superman stop? Did Superman have to appear in uniform? I've seen other artists draw him in his new uniform, I don't think any rendition could make it look decent, I just don't like the forearm, his belt, his over all look, it looks more like a costume than a uniform. It looks like some artist's IDEA of what we think he would wear as opposed to something Superman would actually LIKE wearing. Wonder Woman, Starfire? Back to the book, it appears the Earth elemental needs a human host so I'd like to see more of how the hosts are selected. Is there just one a generation? There's a two page spread that is a little hard to follow. I like the art but I'd like to see it a little more "gritty, raw ." Some artists I'd love to see do a story arc, Bill Sienkiewicz, Alex Maleev, Dave McKean, or Ben Templesmith. Love how Abigail makes here appearance. Of all the books of the new 52, there are very few that draw me in wanting more. I want to more of Swamp Thing Mr. Snyder. Keep it up!
August 31, 2011 5:02 pm I just read the preview available on Comixology. I agree with Connor, good but not great. While Lee has been a fan favorite I've always thought his art as way too "busy." I've been trying to figure out what I was put off about his art. I've been comparing it to Bryan Hitch's work. After some thought, FOR ME, Hitch's work adds a level of detail that brings forth a realism to his characters while Lee's characters seem lifeless. Look at last page of the JLA #1 preview, their bodies and facial expressions are practically identical. Wouldn't the Flash have huge legs and calves, googles? Aquaman have a more developed upper torso? If Wonder Woman is a warrior, wouldn't she dress like one? I have a hard time reading a comic book if I can't get into the art. From the first page I completely felt overwhelmed with all the detail, everything is in focus that I complete missed the "Five Years Ago." It would have been great to start off with a simple black panel with maybe an introduction to the title and with ".... Five Years Ago. Anyway, that's just me.
