Name: John Pavlich

Bio: I am a writer/director/actor/podcaster. I was born in Long Beach, California but I live in Fort Worth, Texas. I am declared by the State of Texas as Legally Blind. I went to Junior College back in 1999 to major in film. I dropped out after two months for personal reasons, but mainly because it was too much like high school and I was told I had to be a student for a year and a half before I could take the class I really wanted: Screenwriting. After that, I lived in Denton for nearly three years, where I was the co-founder of UFO (Underground Film Organization) for the University of North Texas. This was a venue for students to showcase their film work and gain interest from classmates for other projects. In that time, I was able to put together a Halloween screening of Night Of The Creeps, as well as a Coen Brothers film appreciation event, wherein nightly screenings of their work ran for a whole week, from Blood Simple to The Big Lebowski. I was a co-writer and cinematographer for an independent film, which due to production complications I was not involved in, the project was eventually dropped halfway through shooting. I am currently running a film commentary and discussion podcast called Sofa Dogs (http://www.sofadogs.libsyn.com), as well as a pop culture and entertainment news podcast called Couch Surfing. I am also trying to start an independently produced graphic novel, but I'm in desperate need of an artist. The story is similar in both ideas and tone to Mike Mignola's Hellboy, Kevin Smith's Dogma and Joss Whedon's Angel. If anyone out there is interested in a project like that (and can draw), please contact me. Artists I currently like are Fabio Moon, John Bolton and Cliff Richards.

As a fan of The Guild series on the web, I was excited to see the origin stories behind these…

Heh, that IS funny, considering I personally like the video show specifically for that reason. I guess you really can't please everyone all the time. No worries. If you guys aren't reading certain books, or aren't that invested in certain stories and characters, I understand. As I'm sure you know, there are a TON of books that come out each week, and you can't be expected to give a damn about all of them.

"It *was* the Pick of the Week once".

Yeah, once! But hey, I'll take what I can get. :)

It is a shame that you're not at least flipping through the Evil Dead books, because the art by John Bolton is simply stunning. But, to each their own.

In regards to the video show, I'd be curious to see a discussion about various comic writers turned Movie/TV folk, or vice versa, like JMS (Babylon 5, Ghostbusters, Spider-Man, Midnight Nation), BKV (Y The Last Man, Lost), Marc Guggenheim (The Flash, Blade, Eli Stone), Jeph Loeb (Heroes, Smallville, Superman, Batman), etc.

Drew Goddard wrote for Buffy, Angel and Alias. He now writes for Lost and he wrote the script for Cloverfield.

Personally, while yes, it was funny, I found issue 13 of Buffy to be rather stupid. I feel that the idea that Xander and Dracula are buddies now is lame and unbelievable. Plus, for years, Xander is the one character from that series who doesn't seem to grow much. Even in moments (like season five's opener, Buffy Vs Dracula) where he declares out loud that he's through being everyone's "butt monkey", he still stays that way, and this was more of the same.

I miss moments like in the season four opener The Freshman, where he showed up to cheer Buffy up and remind her why she's so awesome, thereby reminding us why he himself is also awesome. In this issue, Dracula felt really out of character to me. I know he was only in one episode of the show, but I'm pretty sure a guy like that would never, ever say the phrase, "Oh balls." Again, it's amusing, but I just don't buy it. And while I know there's going to be the argument that since Xander is friends with Dracula now (eyes rolling), Dracula might've picked up some expressions from Xander.

It feels like a cop out excuse to me. No sir, I don't like it. But, at least the art was much better this time than the previous issue, where it felt like a bunch of time and effort went into the big "surprise" splash page, but the rest of the book looked rushed and thrown together.

To be honest, I feel like you guys don't say enough about the Buffy comics (nevermind that you seem to be completely ignoring Angel or The Evil Dead miniseries), to make it worth mentioning at all. If it's just gonna be a two minute blurb every time of "so that came out, it was fun" and you're not going to actually discuss it in any sort of depth, then why bother?

I'm sorry if this is sounding all too negative. Maybe I'm still a little annoyed with April Fools. In all sincerity, I really do love the show. The discussions about The Boys and Kick Ass were especially entertaining, and I wish there was more of it (getting a little tired of the constant stroking of capes and cowls books, just sayin').

Nevertheless, I'm always excited when the new podcasts come out and the minis are a fantastic idea and I wish other video shows would follow suit. You guys rock.... except for that Astonishing X-Men spoiler that just HAD to be said for some reason. Thanks a lot!.... Please don't pull my account. :)

For the love of chocolate pudding, I hate this stupid, freaking "holiday".

Actually, I think whatever this is, it only seems to affect the streaming flash videos. I started to watch The Totally Rad Show, and it was also playing backwards. But then, I downloaded the video and watched it in Windows Media Player, and it worked just fine.

I also have some very good anti-virus software (avast!), and I've never had a virus just sneak by and affect my computer in such a singular, specific way. One video a year? Who's ever heard of such a thing? How does one even end up with such a pointless, whacky virus (since I'm apparently not the only one)? More importantly, how does one find it and get rid of it?

April 1, 2008 4:08 pm Yeah, backwards video again. This happened to me on the previous one. Is this some sort of joke, or what?

Ummm.... Yeah, my video playback was BACKWARDS!

Meaning, instead of the iFanboy Mini, today I saw the iniM yobnaFi.

How come?

I don't have it in front of me right now (it's in a box, somewhere, in my closet), but I remember a sort of mini-series Punisher comic from the early nineties that was really good. It ran for seven issues (I think). It was called Punisher: The Final Days. I'm trying to pull this from deep within my memory banks, but the book centers around Frank Castle being forced by The Kingpin (because he's kidnapped Micro Chip) to stand trial and go to an Alcatraz-type prison. While there, he battles it out with Jigsaw, gets sliced up real good in the process and escapes from the slammer. Once out, he partners up with Cage, undergoes major reconstructive surgery (and I do mean MAJOR. You'll understand when you see it) and goes on a big revenge kick to get his buddy back.

Good luck searching for the books. If anyone knows the comics I'm talking about, and especially if you know of a Trade Paperback for that arc, please chime in here. I hope this was helpful.
