May 21, 2013 6:16 pm Great, heartfelt article, Romo. As one of the "new" fans seeing the film, I've had a hard time understanding the reactions from the OG's. Until, that is, I listened to the podcast and read this article. I can completely understand being disappointed and frustrated at a movie for stripping a classic favorite for parts and reassembling them into a twisted Frankenstein. For me, however, having not seen Khan prior, this was a fantastic film. The Kirk/Spock moment felt earned, because we watched them earn it over two movies. Sure, that's not the same as 3 seasons, but it was affecting none the less. To me, it was a new story, and it was a supremely satisfying one. P.S. -- Immediately after seeing Into Darkness I came home and watched Space Seed and Wrath of Khan, both for the first time. Space Seed was an excellent hour of television. Khan was very good too, but hilariously, it had almost all of the same problems identified in the podcast about Into Darkness, i.e. No solid Kirk/Spock relationship development, and no explanation of who the hell Khan was for the uninitiated.

May 21, 2013 5:51 pm I think it's OK for it not to be a cliffhanger because it didn't need to be a cliffhanger. Modern movies still do cliffhanger endings between films, but this one decided to leave the viewer with an uncomplicated, happy ending. And honestly, I don't see a problem with that.

May 20, 2013 12:02 am Very interesting listen. As always, you guys offer intelligent and insightful analysis. I think that the main complaints that I've heard for this film come from fans of the original source material. As someone who had never seen Khan until a few hours after seeing Into Darkness, the new movie felt fresh and exciting to me. Additionally, having watched both movies (Khan and Into Darkness) within hours of listening to this podcast, I had a few observations: 1) While Khan's origins are not given much attention in the new movie, they're given even less in the old. Everyone's just kind of expected to understand why he's such a big deal, but unless you've seen the episode he first appeared in, he's just some evil dude. It doesn't detract from the movie, but then, I didn't think it did in the new one, either. 2) In Khan itself, separate from the rest of the series, there really isn't much work done to establish the Kirk/Spock relationship aside from a few scenes at the beginning. Again, without having watched the rest of the series, there's not much in the movie alone to make that final scene terribly affecting. I think, frankly, Into Darkness holds up better as a film, in and of itself, better than Wrath of Khan. But again, this is from a new fan, rather than an old.

May 15, 2013 6:15 pm Wow. This is reminding me of the classic Chuck Dixon run that made me love the character. Nightwing in a new city with a real personality, a fun supporting cast and a deep mystery for Dick to solve with a flare and fun that elude the Dark Knight. Excellent stuff.
