More than any of the other releases under the Heroic Age banner, Young Allies #1 feels like a throwback to a brighter day (wah wah) in comics. A group of young heroes, each with their own perspectives, challenges and backgrounds, thrown together through chance to fight the good fight. I may be biased, as one of the 13 people who actually LIKES Girl-Bucky, but somehow this team of young heroes really intrigued me, and I find myself eager to read more about them.
This issue we get a nice little intro to each character and where they are in their own young lives/heroic careers, and we get an incredibly awesomely named threat (the freakin' Bastards of Evil!). Now that we have the charactrs introduced, I find myself excited to see how their personalities will play off one another, and knowing Sean Mckeever the drama will stay at the forefront, right where it belongs.
Some folks might have had a bit of trouble with some of the more shock-eliciting moments of the book (nuke at Ground Zero, child abductions, what have you), but to me they effectively indicated the high stakes, as well as providing some characters with realistic moral quandries regarding the "heroes don't kill" rule. This is gearing up to be a really special series, before it's cancelled at issue 6 because nobody's gonna read it.
