Oy, more fan fic from Johns.

So, I like the stuff Geoff does. Usually he has a really good eye for the long game and stories like this (see GL: Secret Origin) plant seeds that get paid off in the future. I have learned that no matter how a story starts off, it will have an at least adequate and often amazing end to it. I further understand that there are generally 2 stories that writers want to do with Kal and nine times out of ten will be good on, Origin stories and elseworlds

THAT BEING SAID,

I started reading comics in the middle of the Post Crisis Superman. All the rainbow kryptonite, Lex losing his hair when he was a kid and friends with Clark and Legion of super Hero stuff I read was through back issues and, with very few instances I did not feel the wonder and magic of seeing pa Kent break a brush spanking Superboy. Or the appeal of Pete Ross knowing Clark’s Secret. Or having indestructible clothes made from his baby blanket. I understand that Superman has been around almost 3 times as long as I’ve been alive, but the romance of pulling a color off a color wheel and saying this type of kryptonite makes my beard grow thicker doesn’t appeal to me one bit.

Geoff Johns didn’t really add anything except making the romance between Lana and Clark clearer, changing the costume that Jor and Lara wore, again, and dredging up the same stuff that was in pre crisis and the superman movies.

I did like the art though. I think Gary Frank does great reaction faces for his characters. However when I went out to dinner with a friend of mine last Friday, he pointed out why I don’t like the way he draws smiles. The eyes don’t smile. The muscles do the movement, but the eyes look like they’re staring into the sun or something.

I still recommend reading this issue, but I honestly think trade waiting on Johns is ultimately more satisfying.

Story: 3 - Good
Art: 3 - Good

  1. "Fan Fic"?  Care to elaborate on that?  How could this possibly be considered ‘fan fiction’?

  2. You didn’t find the part where Clark breaks down upon learning about Krypton compelling? That was something not really tackled before, and I thought it was handled really well.
