I have never been a huge fan of Superman or most other super-hero comics. In fact, I didn’t read any DC books until later in life–something I have grown to regret. One of the reasons I did start reading more DC titles was Geoff Johns and his work on Green Lantern Rebirth. That story blew me away and I have been hooked on Green Lantern since. Thanks, Geoff!

So, when I saw that he was writing a Superman Origins story I promised myself I would check it out. I can’t say that I am overly happy that I did, but I will say that it is a lot of decent book at the 3.99 pricing point.

The story isn’t anything that is really new, but Johns does a fair job of running through it quickly and providing a lot of content for the first issue. Of course, due to the amount of story given right of the bat, there is not much room for depth or any sense of intimacy with most of the characters. I wish that more issues would be written so that we could explore the Kent’s life and Smallville more. Perhaps, that is just me wanting Geoff to take over the Superman story altogether. However, for an introduction to the story it is mediocre. Knowing Geoff’s style and abilities I’m sure that the series will really take off towards the end of the second issue and keep me wanting more all the way through to the end.

The art is something that I’m really torn on. Gary Frank is a wonderful artist, but I have a really hard time getting a feel of the characters ages based upon his lines alone. I can’t tell if Clark is 10, 15, or a freak of nature with a 29 year old head on an 8 year old’s body. Looking at each individual aspect his work is truly impressive, but when viewed as a whole there are just too many contradicting and confusing images being portrayed. Unfortunately, I am only going to rate his art as “Average” this time. Sorry, Gary.

Overall it is not a bad book for the price, but I’m sure there are some better titles to spend your 3.99 on this week. This will most likely make for a much better trade than an issue-by-issue purchase.

Story: 3 - Good
Art: 2 - Average

  1. You’re a Superman Goalie! This was tremendous!!!!!!!!

  2. Sorry. I don’t mean to be a goalie. Frank’s character portrayals just baffled me and sometimes just simply freaked me out. I did love his Lex, though. I know that the story will really take off later, it’s just not there yet.
