I know many people may be turned off by yet another Superman origin story but I liked it.  Geoff Johns does a great job of humanizing Clark.  At this stage in his development he seems to be like any other boy his age only with powers.  Then we get to see how he deals with the knowledge of finding out he is the sole survivor of an alien race.  This seemed almost like an episode of Smallville but I’m ok with that.  I’m glad the the focus of the story is on Clark’s daily life and not his actions as a superhero.  Also in typical Johns fashion, he manages to reinterpret parts of the comic lore. For example, how Clark gets his trademark specs and how Martha decides to design a costume based on his Kryptonian heritage. To make this story even better we get a treat with some awesome art by Gary Frank.  The detail in his work is very extensive and he is really good at portraying emotion in his characters.  By the way, that is one crazy and evil looking Lex Luthor.  It appears that the next issue deals with his time with the Legion.  I wonder what other key moments in Superman’s life Johns will touch on.  I hope we get to see how he finds Krypto or his first meeting with Lois.  With 5 issues let there will be plenty of good moments left to see.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 5 - Excellent

  1. I know alot of people complain about this retelling of Superman’s origins being redundant, but I think Johns is telling the origin in a differnent way than Byrne and Waid did before him. Whereas they focused on just the character’s beginings, Johns is trying to construct an entirely new mythology behind Superman, which I find makes him more interesting. Like the review!

  2. It isn’t so much that Johns is creating a new myth.  It’s that he’s re-introducing elements of the myth that neither Byrne nor Waid were allowed to use for legal reasons.  The development of his powers is also similar to how it was done in Smallville, so he’s in a way making it canon.  But it does make for a more interesting Superman, one that’s more in line with the one from the very early days yet adapted for a modern audience.
