I think this one is going to get a lot of flack. To be honest, I myself am starting to scratch my head over this. I really don’t know where Bendis is going with this storyline, what’s going to happen next, or whether or not I care. The thing is, I’m enjoying each issue. I diverged from the ifanboys opinion about the last two issues of Mighty Avengers. True, thematically it does seem like Nick Fury’s storyline is a poor fit for a title that has been about Tony Stark’s post-Civil War Avengers from the beginning. In that sense maybe this issue is back on track a bit since it centers on one of the mightiest of the Mighty Avengers. But it’s about a character that most comics’ fans would probably just as soon see dead. Or perhaps rejoice if it was revealed he was a Skrull.

That doesn’t seem to be the direction taken here. But is this a throwaway one-shot or a set-up to make the Sentry a pivot point for the Skrull Invasion? Can Bendis possibly succeed in making sense of this muddy, mixed-up, who-cares character? Or will the weight of his contradictions and baggage — both within the comics and without — drag down this summer blockbuster crossover event?

Taken on its own, there were elements of this story that I liked. But there were also moments — no, actually entire pages — that I really wasn’t sure what was going on. But overall the art was fun.

(Oh, and just a quick shout out to Marvel Subscriptions, because there’s really nothing more exciting than getting Wednesday’s comics 2 days early on a Monday.)

  1. Excellent review. This is a strong, but not excellent, book. The most exciting element is the tantalizing possibility that the Sentry will finally be used to advance a plot in an interesting way.

And the subscription thing – I agree totally.
