Can we just call the Sentry "Dr. NOOOO", drop him in a black hole and be done with it? I mean, I really want to like the guy, but, for crying out freaking loud, can you be any more full of fail, Bob? Do you really need to fly to friggin' Saturn and curl up in the fetal position and cry your worthless little eyes out because someone YOU KNOW IS A SHAPE-SHIFTING ALIEN says, "Hey, I'm the Void. Pay no attention to the fact that this is an invasion of shape-shifting aliens and believe I'm the Void because I just shape-shifted into the Void right in freaking front of you. You did this, Bob. Now, go cry, Emo Boy." I swear, I want Nick Fury and his Junior Commandos back now.
This whole issue was just bad. Just... just bad. It was a badly written tale about a badly written character. From the beginning, it's just bad. The story opens with the Sentry trying to foil a bank robbery. Yet, he finds his prey is none other than the Void and starts screaming about how he killed the Void and begins crying. Seriously. He's CRYING like Halle Berry at the Oscars. The point of this? No point because now Bob must depart and leave the Void to his wickedness so he can go stop the Skrulls from pulling a 9/11 on the Baxter Building. In the most productive thing he'll do this issue, he grabs the ship and flies it into space to rip it apart (does he solve ALL his problems like that?) before it goes ka-blooey in his face.
After a scene in the FF infirmary (where Reed and Ben's dialogue seems... off), we cut to post-Disassembled/pre-Civil War New Avengers party where Skrull Jarvis is allowed to thumb around in the files of the Avengers for no real reason so he can report back to the other Skrull agents: Pym, Contessa, Elektra, various agents of SHIELD and HYDRA and, yes, Jessica Drew. It's official, Drew is a Skrull which might be the only thing of plot importance in this whole darn story. The entire meeting is basically to point out the most bleedingly obvious thing: the Sentry is so utterly useless, you can just shift into the Void RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIM, he'll cry "NOOOOOO!" and run flying to Saturn. Which is exactly what the Skrulls do. And that's exactly what Bob does. Man, I hate this guy.
And the finale? In the midst of the battle of Manhattan, Lindy is saved from Defender Skrull by the Void who says he's going to protect her. Her response? Yeah, you know her response: "NOOOOOOOO!" Dang it, Lindy! Not you too! Seriously, what the heck was the point of this issue? I'd prefer to see what Tony's building to fight the Skrulls or what Jessica Drew's up to before wondering what planet Sentry went off to so he could curl up in a ball and whine.
I know a lot of the other reviewers gave this story a 2 or even a 3, but I just can't do it. This was an absolute waste of 3 bucks. I could have bought a chicken sandwich at Jack in the Box with that money. This was such so poor a story. And I didn't like the art. It was just so scratchy and some of the characters just look... bad. Tony looks like he's been binging at Hometown Buffet and Carol looks slightly like a man. Though I will get Pham credit for some good emotional face work underneath all the unneeded sketch lines. Nevertheless, this had to be the poorest Secret Invasion issue yet. You really REALLY need to step it up, Bendis.

Story: 1 - Poor
Art: 3 - Good
Art: 3 - Good
it’s not that I hate the character so much as I hate his constant wasted potential. He is almost always incapacitated or off panel in the Avengers books, so why have him at all is my argument? In the time that I’ve been reading about Bob I can’t think of a single time where he’s been effective really versus always in the fetal position with other characters coaxing him into the storyline to serve as a deux ex machina in the final act only to then go back immediately back into the fetal position. It’s hard for me to care about his problems when I don’t feel like I’ve ever gotten to know him at all in the first place. For me, he’s just always the crazy guy in the corner. Should we use him yet? Nah, lets let him be crazy for a little bit longer than maybe we’ll use him when we write ourselves into a corner.
This seems like it’s part of a build up to a big sentry kicking ass moment. But unforuneately it reiterate’s the sentry’s tendency to run off and cry. Hopefully he’ll either die or be turned around as a characer or both by the end of sercret invasion, because the first time I saw sentry, I actually liked him. I thought I’d hate him, but I liked him as some kind of weird replacement for thor. He should be fighting skrull-pheonixes and skrull-blackbolts, not doing the same thing over and over. But there’s a chance this could turn into something interesting. Just a small chance. (Please, bendis.)
