I really loved the first batch of Snyder Detective issues. It had a great balance of action and detective stuff. Batman doing his thing in sweeping beautiful environments, Gordon doing his thing on the murky streets. It was a great balance. So its really unfortunate that Snyder has decided to go away from that formula and slow the pace down with a very conversation heavy issue.

I’ve never been interested in the Jim and James Jr. Gordon story so reading an issue absent of Batman where its mostly Jim just going around and talking to people wasn’t really for me. We had the Joker make an appearance, and he’s demented as usual, and even though he’s being given the Hanibal Lecter treatment, still finds a way wreak havoc. Don’t get me wrong, the story was pretty good, but its not quite what i want from a Batman comic.

Francavilla’s art is exceptional as always, and he’s got an amazing color palette. I am slightly miffed that Snyder robbed us of an opportunity to see Francavilla portray Batman, Gotham or any real action scenes because he’s just so damn good at that. I feel that his talents are slightly wasted on an issue that was mostly just people talking to each other.

If you’re looking for a long lost Gotham Central Detective story then this is arc is perfect for you, but if you’re looking for a a classic Batman superhero Detective story, then this might leave you a bit disappointed.

    Story: 3 - Good
    Art: 5 - Excellent
