With the reuniting of Dini and Nguyen, I expected this to be the heir apparent to Detective Comics.  While we do get a little bit of that flavor, this is clearly it’s own book.  Nguyen’s style is a little grittier here, very appropriate for street-level.  Even the color puts in some work in conveying a feel for each scene.  While the red palette for Firefly’s scene may slightly obvious, the grimey yellowing of the first scene, featuring Gotham’s cops on the streets, is slightly more subtle.  Dini works his end of things my telling the story through multiple lenses so that, although Batman is present, this doesn’t come off as a Batman-centric book… which is exactly as it should be.  The whole project comes off fresh and unique, with my one possible complaint being a recycled Harley Quinn story point from Batman: The Animated Series… which isn’t leaned on for long, so is quite forgivable.  Dini’s characterization is clear and compelling (especially, interestingly enough, Damian), and the simple premise that Batman’s 2nd-stringer villains are apt to get more bold and creative, is a great idea that I want to see played out.  Additionally, Manhunter is back (!) and properly done by the original writer.  I’m basically happy about this, and hoping this second resurrection leaves behind some of the stupid and boring elements that the series took on after it came back from its first cancelation.  It’s a new backdrop for Kate and writer Andreyko, and a new paradigm for Gotham and Dini.  Let’s run with it and have fun!

  1. I didnt see any references to BTAS with Harley. What episode do you think it’s referring to?

  2. The episode where she tries to "just go shopping" and ends up in trouble because she’s who she is.  I think it was a piece of the three-vingette Christmas episode, but I could be wrong about that part.

  3. @templar: I thought that X-Mas episode your referring too had Harley and Poison Ivy kidnap Bruce and use his credit card…

  4. Maybe that’s not the same episode I’m thinking of, and I got the similar settings mixed up in my head.  But there was one where Harley was released from Arkham because they had concluded she was reformed, she went shopping and freaked everyone out just by being her.
