  1. That cover is redonkulous.  And not in a good way.

  2. I’ve always wanted to try an X-Men series (glutton for punishment, I guess), and this seems like as good of a place as any to ask.  If I were to try one of the X-Books (not Wolverine, Deadpool, etc), which is considered the good one?

  3. @Kory-Agreed.  Particularly Emma’s rack.

@Slockhart-I’m enjoying this book, but it isn’t for everyone.  Not just the art, but the way Fraction is writing this might turn a few people off.  And since I’m not reading any other books, I can’t say how good they are.  Give this issue a shot, see if it clicks for you.

  4. @slockhart – I’d say either Uncanny or X-Force.  Uncanny is very fun right now – it may be a little confusing at first, but you should have a handle on it if you stick with it for another issue or two.

X-Force is a lot darker with a more serious tone.  Lots of mutants with their backs up against the wall type shit.  Both titles are very good right now

  5. @Slockhart – I would try X-Factor, definitely.

  6. @Slockhart

Fraction is doing good things with Uncanny, but if you want just a good X-men story go back and get the trades of Whedons Astonishing X-men Run. It will ruin all other X-books for you. But in a good way, like losing your virginity to a porn star.

  7. Liking Uncanny, but if it stays at $3.99 after the Dark X-Men cross over I’m going to be really pissed. Most likely it will, doubtful Marvel will up the price and then bring it back down.

  8. Is that Wolverin’s arm? Ugg his whole body is messed up.

  9. Breaking News: Greg Land’s Art Still Sucks! ::Sighs.:: I’m really tired of hearing it every month. Yes we know. No it’s not going to get better. Though I will say in this case Wolverine’s arm and Emma’s breasts are hints he didn’t trace anything! 😉 (Though in all fairness to Land, Wolverine’s entire body is improbable. From his height/weight, the way his musculature has been rendered since the Jim Lee days, and the bizarre art choices during his adamantium-less days.)

Didn’t really enjoy last issue, but the Psylocke/Revanche stuff and the Science Team are pretty interesting. I already dropped X-Men Legacy like a bad habit. And in an odd turn, I’m loving Cable and X-Force (this child of the 90s never expected to say that!). Fun time to be an X-Fan.

  10. didnt this just come out? And I STILL don’t care about Psylocke

  11. Everyone is complaing about Emma’s boobs (or at least how they’re drawn)….but look at the placement of her head to the rest of her body. I didnt realize Emma had rubber powers as well.

While Wolverine looks like that guy in that hilarious photo of a roid’s user getting arrested.

    I mean this pic: http://www.omero.it/media/47/20061218-gregval.jpg

  12. The Sisterhood plot is the least interesting thing about this book IMO

  13. Love this book..too bad the Dark Reign crossover is coming to ruin the flow..<sigh>

  14. I’ve been really loving this book recently. Hey, I’m loving anything by Matt Fraction really.

  15. I’ve got a question that will sound sarcastic but is not. Does Greg Land have an audience? Is there a section of the comics buying population who love his stuff? I wouldn’t hold it against them if he did, but all of my community experience is online or on podcasts, and the consensus seems to be that his art is objectively poor. I know it’s not for me, but are there lines at cons? Is he a beloved creator? Are people buying this book because of him? I just don’t have any frame or reference.

  16. @jamesschneider  My theory is that Greg has luckedd out and been put on books that were going to sell anyway because of character, story or writer. I don;t hate his art because I can just get past it if the writings good enough which on most of the books he’s been on thats been the case. But i’ve never heard anyone say "Man this book would be so much better if Land was doing the art" Really who knows why certain artists get put on big books and others don’t. I really think if people stopped bitching on messageboards about it and actually started writing marvel and expressing their feelings in a constructive manner then he might now get as much work. We won’t know unless we try.

  17. I agree that the sisterhood plot isn’t the best ever, but overall I think Fraction has done really well on this book.

  18. Man that above post of mine is full of typos, oh i need coffee this morning. Pepsi Throwback, while very good, is no substitute for a good old cup of gentlemans brown

  19. Greg Land gets work because he meets his deadlines.

  20. At least Greg Land’s art is easy on the eyes, not like Larry Stroman’s art!

  21. Yeah, um, to expect people to NOT complain about this cover would be kind of ridiculous, even though they’ve complained about every Land issue leading up to this. You don’t draw Emma’s neck as if it grew out of her right shoulder and get a pass, sorry. How the f— did this get out of the Marvel offices? They’re like two weeks ahead of schedule anyway–why not have Land go back and fix it? (I guess maybe it takes longer than two weeks to teach him basic anatomy? What exactly happen here? Did he decide to trace someone’s head on someone else’s body?)

That said, am I the only one who finds Land’s art entertaining in a way that isn’t totally meanspirited? I ain’t mad at it. It’s fun to look at. He’s really the perfect artist for this book (or half the issues of it). His slutty style plays off of Fraction’s characterizations really well. Fraction writes almost all these guys as if they’re straight out of a TMZ gossip report or something. Think of what Perez Hilton would want to know about the characters, and that’s what Fraction tells us about them: "Hot gay Northstar back in San Fran–advocating socialized health care!" "Who’s Karma sleeping with randomly in that one panel?–We’ll never know, but we’ll keep our ears open!" "Pixie’s drunk debauchery in the mansion: under 21 but her teammates don’t care!" It’s all a sign of the times or whatever. You can call it shallow (a lot of it is), but Fraction’s done a really good job of making it seem contemporary and socially relevant or whatever. Land’s the perfect artist for this stuff.

  22. @flapjaxx agreed about fractions take on the book. but if thats the reason they put land on it i think someone with a j. scott campbell style would be better suited to compliment dodson

  23. Land gets slagged a lot of because he turns every female character into a sex doll, but I have to say at least he’s an equal opportunity beautician: I don’t think I’ve ever seen Northstar this handsome either.

  24. Though I’ll chime back in to say that Lady Deathstrike needs to buy a bra already. This isn’t even the first time.

  25. His anatomy is awful sometimes and you can pick out copy and paste jobs if you really look, but aside from that I’ve enjoyed Land’s art on Uncanny.  Its definately a lot more dynamic than people give him credit for.  I’ve heard posters say his characters look stiff, but I don’t see it.  And the colorist has been doing a really nice job.

His issues have been a lot more fun than Dodson’s

  26. I love this book, but I really feel like I’m having trouble understanding what the fuck is going on and who these bitches in the Sisterhood are; aside from Deathstrike and Pryor, I’m just lost.

  27. @diabhol – The 2 in similar costumes (1 blonde, 1 brunette) are Martinique and Lady Mastermind, the original Mastermind’s daughters.  The blonde was part of the X-Men during Carey’s pre-Messiah Complex run.

The one with the 6 arms is Spiral, and the one with the dragons is Chimera, who as far as I can tell is a brand new character

  28. @tazz  I think the Dark Reign plot is shaping up to be awesome.  It’s not something being imposed on the book.  Having Emma part of the cabal is something that Fraction has been working on from the beginning of DR, and I’m excited to see the Xmen get more integrated in the Marvel U.

  29. @ohcaroline – I love the Emma/Scott breakup thing that’s going on.  Its subtle and being handled very well.  And its only gonna get worse

  30. This issue could have been quite enjoyable with competent art.  But with the "art" that was provided, I can’t bring myself to rate it higher than a 2.

  31. I really enjoyed this issue. I really did, great writing. And I have to say, I thought Land’s art seemed a little different here. Still traced in some aspects, obviously, but I thought the Wolverine/Psylocke pages had some real movement to it that you don’t often see from Land. As well, I really enjoyed the Emma/Martinique (I think it was Martinique and not Lady Mastermind) fight and the preceding Jean Dream, even though the one panel was obviously Land drawing a Pam Anderson photo. Is the art great? No, I would prefer Dodon on this arc, but c’est la vie. 4/5 for me.

  32. I really loved aspects of this issue — I know I’m a little tinhatty on this subject, but I’m pretty sure that really was Emma chatting with Jean in the white room and getting the power to beat the bad guys.  Not a dream!  I also liked Scott’s hell being a classroom full of dead teammates (and also sitting between his two dead exes, yeesh!)  Plus, Pixie saving the day and, the kicker, Wolverine having saved a piece of Jean’s hair (yeah, THERE’S NO WAY THAT COULD GO WRONG).

I did have to rate this issue down just because of the art — I couldn’t tell people apart half the time and it was really hard to follow.  Still digging the story though!

  33. Geez, the art was all over the place.  Worse than any other time.  OK, enough of that.

I loved the story here!!  I agree with you ohcaroline, I think Emma got some power there.  I mean, she was using her diamond form AND psychic powers at the same time right?  When Lady Mastermin mentioned that Emma was blocking her out, Emma was also in diamond form I believe.  IDK, maybe its wishful thinking AND X-men fanboyism.

If Dodson or anyone else was doing the artwork, this would have been a 5

  34. @drakedangerz When Emma is in Diamond form, her mind is unreadable, but the trade off is she can’t use her powers. At least that’s what Morrison established.

@ohcaroline Well, the Emma/Jean scene is a dream, I believe Jean even mentions it. You’re right that it’s not an illusion by Martinique.

  35. the art isnt as bad as everyone seems to say it is.  granted it isnt the best but i cant say it is bad (it is clean and i like clean) though i didnt understand the every other panal was red until at the end when they tell you. and i also like that things seem to be happening to the X-Men now.

  36. @cutty,

Of course I forgot about Spiral; she’s actually a favorite. The Wyngarde sisters and Chimera just ain’t familiar enough for me to get a grip on ’em, I guess.

Something about the way they lay this book out really fucks me up.

The fact that I continue to enjoy it despite that says quite a bit about the writing and story.

  37. @Prax  Okay, it might be a dream but it’s a REAL dream.  *insists*  I suppose Emma has some residual Phoenix power from one of those dreadful Phoenix minis, doesn’t she?

  38. @captianjack   So why was every other panel red?  I didn’t get that at all.

  39. @Ohcaroline-Wolverine mentions something in the end about turning off the emergency lights.  So its probably safe to assume that they were the ones flashing red.

  40. @drakedangerz Really? I thought that was obvious, oh well.

@ohcaroline Yeah, didn’t mean for that to come off so condescending, it is a dream, just not one created by Martinique and, yeah, I think, like you, it’s tied into the Endsong/Warsong nonsense.

  41. I just can’t do it anymore.  Good writing can’t make up for the art.  I won’t say it’s bad, but it’s definitely not my style.

I’m not going to be a fan who whines about something, yet still buys it.  I’m taking my money elsewhere.

  42. I hate you Greg Land. I really truly despise your art with a passion. Why does every woman have to have ‘orgasm face’? Whether fighting, laughing, yelling, being absolutely still, or even running in fear they have constant smirking cock in my vagina face.

    STOP, PLEASE PLEASE STOP!

  43. On the cover, Logan’s bicep looks like a heart.

  44. Not a bad issue – just an in-between one. Into every comic the issue-long fight must fall, I guess.

  45. 5/5. Love where this book has been going

  46. Dropped.  I cannot look at another page by Greg Land; he’s finally broken my will to go on.
